MRS NICOLA TAYLOR
PRINCIPAL
As we prepare to celebrate the 140th Anniversary of PLC Armidale in 2027, my area of research interest focuses on the historical influence and enduring legacy of the Presbyterian Church in establishing schools and universities, especially its contribution to the education of girls and women.
I have been exploring how the educational vision and Christian foundations of these institutions have shaped their identity, purpose and contribution to society over successive generations. It has been fascinating to consider these questions through visits to educational institutions and places of historical significance in Edinburgh and St Andrew’s, Scotland during my leave.
While I am away from the College, my thoughts are very much with our Class of 2026, with two of the four weeks of HSC examinations now completed.
I commend our Year 12 students for the perseverance, courage and character they have demonstrated throughout their final year of schooling.
I also wish to acknowledge the exceptional commitment of their teachers, who have worked tirelessly to prepare, encourage and support them, not only academically but also personally, as they navigate this significant milestone. We continue to uphold our girls in prayer as they approach their remaining examinations.
Term 4 commenced with the induction of our 2027 ...
... Student Leadership Team. I congratulate each of these students on accepting the responsibility and privilege of leadership.
In many of their prefect application speeches, the girls reflected on leadership as not primarily about a title or position, but the willingness to serve others, demonstrate integrity and positively influence the community around them. I look forward to seeing how they embrace these opportunities in the year ahead.
Although I am not physically present at the College, I have been delighted to follow the many activities, achievements and opportunities unfolding across both the Junior and Senior Schools. I encourage all parents to take some time to explore the Photo Gallery on the Parent Portal HERE. The photographs really do tell a thousand words, capturing the breadth of experiences that characterise a PLC Armidale education, from academic endeavour and creative pursuits to sporting achievements, service, friendship and everyday moments of learning.
You may have noticed that our public social media presence has looked somewhat different over recent months. Last year, in response to growing concerns about the capacity for photographs of children and young people to be digitally manipulated, altered or misused, we changed our approach to publishing student images. Consequently, we now share very few surnames and photographs featuring girls looking directly at the camera on our public social media platforms, except where parents have specifically provided congratulatory images for publication. This practice may be reviewed in future.
This is a deliberate and considered approach to protecting the digital identity and wellbeing of our students. It does not mean that there is any less happening at the College! Rather, our Parent Portal, secure behind the College digital ‘firewall’ provides a more appropriate environment in which families can enjoy a richer visual record of College life. It is another example of how we seek to balance celebrating our girls’ achievements with our responsibility to safeguard them in an increasingly complex digital world.
I also wish to express my sincere appreciation to Rita Brissett - Group Accountant and Business Manager, Fiona Wake - Head of Junior School, and Kate Clynch - Head of Senior School, who are providing excellent leadership of the College during my absence. Their professionalism, commitment and care for our community are greatly valued, and I am enormously grateful for the confidence with which they have assumed these additional responsibilities.
Finally, I extend my very best wishes to Amanda Burney and Jennifer Leahy as they commence our highly regarded Year 9 Explore, Serve, Journey (ESJ) program this weekend. This distinctive experience is an important part of a PLC Armidale education, inviting our girls to step beyond familiar comforts, embrace challenges, strengthen relationships and discover something more about themselves and their capabilities. I am grateful to the staff who make such transformative experiences possible.
As we enter the final term of the school year, I am reminded that our 2026 theme, Courage & Character, is reflected not only in the significant milestones and public achievements we celebrate, but also in the quieter, everyday acts of perseverance, kindness, service and responsibility that shape our College community.
The Apostle Paul reminds us: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Thank you to our students, staff and families for the many ways you continue to do just that.
Throughout the year, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the various interests and accomplishments of PLC Armidale girls. We will be aware of the experiences girls undertake to represent the College. We may not know about experiences and achievements in areas of interest outside of school. Please let our Communications and Marketing Manager, Mrs Arundale know. Mrs Arundale greatly enjoys telling the story of the quality and achievements of our PLC Armidale girls. Below is the news we know so far from the holidays....
We are pleased to announce that everyone who auditioned to perform or volunteered for our behind-the-scenes crew will be part of the show. For our 2027 musical production, we have double-cast all our principal roles, with both performers sharing equal billing.

Years7/8 Central Australia Cultural Immersion Experience
Years10/11 Thaliand Agape Orphanage
During the September/October break, a Year 8 group headed off to Alice Springs for a unique optional Explore Serve Journey experience to deepen their understanding of Indigenous perspectives and engage meaningfully with the world’s oldest living culture.
They travelled through the awe-inspiring landscapes of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon, exploring Aboriginal connections to Country and learning from Traditional Owners.
As part of our Explore Serve Journey program a team of our Year 10 & 11 students enjoyed the opportunity to serve and support the Agape Home, which cares for children living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS, and McKean Centre, which provides residential care for older people, during the September break.
Through practical tasks and shared activities, our girls are lent a hand and buillt meaningful relationships, while experiencing Thai culture, food and local traditions.
A chance to serve others and gain perspectives that will stay with them long after they return home.
We welcomed more than 60 girls onto our Senior School campus last week for a Senior School experience.
Each Wednesday, we run a creative wellbeing program for students in years 7-11 in small groups. In addition to the small group sessions, we also set aside time for individual sessions and tailored small groups.
Where possible, we attempt to identify girls we believe would benefit from additional support or creative wellbeing time. In these cases, parents are contacted to receive permission for their daughter to participate. However, we realise there may be many girls who wish to take advantage of this creative wellbeing time, and we would love to provide them with this opportunity.
Therefore, we wish to invite parents to please let us know if your daughter, or a suggested small group, would be keen to take advantage of this service. There are no additional costs involved, and students may attend over several weeks, depending on their needs and availability.
The creative wellbeing space is colourful, welcoming and relaxed, providing an environment where students can unwind through painting, drawing and other creative activities while engaging in supportive, confidential conversations. For some students, the sessions provide a chance to relax, connect and recharge. For others, they may offer additional support with concerns such as anxiety, stress, friendships, self-confidence, homesickness (for boarders), or other wellbeing challenges.
The program is facilitated by Paula Jenkins, a qualified Art Therapist and professional artist, currently completing a Master of Counselling. She brings extensive experience supporting young people through creative wellbeing programs, art therapy and mentoring.
If you would like to discuss whether these sessions may be suitable for your daughter, please feel free to contact her at pjenkins@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au or you can call her directly on 0439 384 433.

Students are not required to have a mobile phone at school. If one is brought, it must be switched off and not accessed during the school day.
Limited-function phones, or phones with low/no data for students in Stages 4 and 5 (Years 7 - 10) are preferred. If a mobile phone is brought to school, it is to be stored in the student’s locker, not pocket or bag. Students are required to secure their lockers with their own padlock.
Ongoing feedback and student reflection on learning are essential to measure understanding, strengths and areas for growth.
The engagement of parents in this process is a way to enhance communication between the College and home, providing an opportunity for parents to follow up with teachers regarding their child’s progress.
By logging regularly into Edumate, you will be able to see your daughter's assessment test results, teacher feedback on the task and upcoming tasks to put on the family calendar.
To access your daughter’s results, once into Edumate, you will see a tab titled ‘Progress’. From there, click on Past Tasks. You will also be able to see Upcoming Tasks and previous Academic Reports.

who had their first Kindergarten Transition & Mentorship experience on Friday.
One of the many advantages of being part of our PLC Armidale community is the seamless continuity we can offer our students as they move from Pre-Kindergarten to Kindergarten.
As we already know each child well—their strengths, learning styles and social connections—our teachers have been able to design a transition program that is responsive to their needs and tailored to ensure a smooth, confident start to school life.
Our Kindergarten Transition Program, “Ready, Set, Grow!”, is a four-week journey designed to build familiarity, confidence and a love of learning.
The program gently introduces our 2027 Kindergarten students to the routines, expectations and environment of ‘big school’, while fostering friendships, independence and a sense of belonging.
Friday's focus was developing our understanding that our marks have meaning and we communicated using lines and pictures.
We created our own Mr Squiggle drawings, and then we took a line for a walk after viewing the picture book 'The Line' by Paula Bossio. This was the inspiration for creating a folding book story using pictures only.
Each week in our Junior School Chapel Service we award our students for achievement in academic, leadership and service pursuits.
Congratulations girls!

In Week 1, some of our youngest Junior School girls visited Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre to explore how its dam and river are used and cared for.
From nature walks and sketching to dip netting for tiny invertebrates, the girls enjoyed hands-on learning about the world around them.
They also explored how animals move, imagined creatures of their own and practised creating and interpreting simple graphs. It gave them a wonderful day of curiosity, creativity, and discovery in the great outdoors!
Please take the time to thoroughly read the Junior School Handbook, which contains essential information regarding the daily operations of the Junior School. This resource will assist in ensuring a smooth and informed start to the year.
Uniform slips will be placed in student diaries as gentle reminders about maintaining our uniform standards. Additionally, digital technology protocols and expectations should be reviewed with your daughter. A signature panel is provided in her student diary, and we ask that it be signed to indicate that these guidelines have been read and understood, ensuring a shared commitment to safe and responsible technology use.
Homework for all students will be distributed every Monday and should be submitted each Friday. Repetition and mastery play a vital role in deep learning, and at our school, we strongly encourage students to embrace these practices.
Please refer to the School Calendar and your daughter's Diary on the PLC Armidale Orbit App and Lion's Roar for upcoming events. Additionally, schedules will be attached to the weekly homework sheets to assist families in staying organised, followed by a message through the PLC Armidale App with urgent or reminder messages via SMS. We are trying to reduce the amount of emails appearing in your inbox, so using these alternative platforms is our approach.
Each edition of our Lions Roar newsletter will showcase a different class on rotation, providing a wonderful opportunity to celebrate student learning and achievements. This newsletter also serves as a platform to highlight our students' activities outside of school, fostering a strong sense of community.
For safety reasons, after-school collection at 3:45 pm will be from the front gate only. The side reception area is designated for bus boarding, so keeping it clear is appreciated. This also applies to morning drop-off. The front curb is a designated drop-off point. If you need to speak with staff, please use the parking areas to avoid disrupting traffic flow. Students attending Homework Centre should be collected from the side gate if the front reception is locked.

Come along to serve, rally, smash and have some fun on Wednesday lunchtimes.
Whether you’re an experienced badminton player or have never picked up a racquet before, everyone is welcome! The sessions are a great opportunity to improve your skills, learn some new techniques, get active and enjoy some friendly competition with friends.
Students can come along, have a hit and develop their confidence on the court in a relaxed and supportive environment. You don’t need to be an expert, just bring your enthusiasm and be ready to play!

Congratulations to all the girls who performed in what was an extraordinary and immensely rewarding in-house concert. With 42 performances over more than three hours, and an exceptional diversity of repertoire and instrumentation, the concert was a wonderful celebration of the breadth and vitality of music at PLC.
The diversity of performances was particularly exciting, with the inclusion of traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng and liuqin adding a new dimension to the concert. We were also treated to some outstanding performances from our Junior School musicians. It is especially rewarding to see a great number of Junior School girls developing refinement and nuance in their playing as their technical skills continue to grow. Lydia and Zoe Yuan were particular highlights, demonstrating a wonderful sense of musical maturity and a growing mastery of their instruments in their cello performances.
The concert also featured many first-time performers, making it a particularly significant occasion for a number of our younger musicians. The following girls all performed at their first In House Concert at PLC Armidale
Charlotte Haggerty, Sybella Mansen, Grace Li, Zoey Yue, Elliana Cameron, Evelyn Nizik (on the double bass) and Anna Song.
Our Pathways students made a rich and positive contribution to the program. Zoe Yuan performed in three items, including a piece with the Pathways class ensemble, a guzheng solo and a duet with Celia Cai, who performed on the liuqin. Rebecca Meng also accompanied several students from her Year 10 cohor, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that makes these occasions so rewarding.
Vocal performances were another highlight, with strong contributions from across the school, from Annalise Jacometti in Year 4 in the Junior School through to Elise Tisserand, who is beginning her Year 12 Music 1 HSC course. It was wonderful to hear such a broad range of voices and to see students at different stages of their musical journeys sharing the same concert platform.
Finally, a sincere thank you to Li Ling Chen and Matthew Arden, who stepped in at short notice to accompany students when our usual accompanist became unavailable. Their flexibility and support ensured the girls could perform as planned, and we greatly appreciated it. The late change of accompanists created a lot of last-minute adjustments and coordination, and thank you to Mrs Constance Dunham for overseeing this with me.
Congratulations again to all the performers, and thank you to everyone who contributed to such a memorable and musically rewarding occasion.
Harriet Minter and Harley Li travelled to Sydney in August to perform with Regional Youth Orchestra NSW, an outstanding achievement that reflects their musical ability, dedication and commitment to excellence.
Regional Youth Orchestra NSW is a highly selective, audition-based ensemble that brings together talented young musicians from regional conservatoriums across New South Wales. Harriet was selected as a member of the first violins and Harley was selected as the only bassoon player from across the state. The opportunity to participate in this program is a significant honour, providing students with the chance to work alongside other exceptional young musicians in an intensive week of rehearsals, culminating in a concert at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
The program challenges students with advanced orchestral repertoire and provides an invaluable opportunity to develop their technical skills, ensemble playing and musical interpretation in a demanding and inspiring environment.
Harriet and Harley's selection is a wonderful recognition of their musical achievement and places them among an exceptional group of young musicians from across regional NSW. Both girls recently completed their Seventh Grade AMEB exams last term with High Distinction. Their performance with the Regional Youth Orchestra of New South Wales and high achievements in AMEB in is a source of great pride for the College and reflects the high standard of musical performance they have worked hard to achieve.
Harley has also been accepted as a full scholarship recipient at the Fei Tian Academy of the Arts in New York State. After an intense period of several months of training and preparation with our peripatetic double reed specialist, Li Ling Chen, Harley completed her seventh grade AMEB exam with High Distinction and auditioned successfully for the Fei Tian Academy of the Arts in New York State. While we are sad to see her go, we wish her the very best for her future musical career and are pleased we were able to off her the highest level of training and opportunities to enable to her achieve this milestone as she pursues a professional career in bassoon.
The girls had their inaugural performance at the Term 4 In House Concert.
Our peripatetic tutor Li Ling Chen has an enthusiastic group of students who are really excelling with their oboe study.
Oboe is not a common instrument and it is one of the most challenging to play, but the girls just love it!
The PLC Armidale Private Tuition program allows girls to take part in instrumental and vocal lessons at the College. Lessons are offered on an individual and rotational basis by highly qualified teachers who are experts in their field. Most students have a 30-minute lesson; however, advanced students may negotiate a longer lesson time. Instruments on offer include violin, viola, cello, double bass, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, euphonium, bassoon, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, piano, voice, guitar, recorder or drums.
If you are interested in these lessons for your daughter, please email the Director of Music at mminter@plcarimidale.nsw.edu.au or complete the Google form sent to girls and families.

Our classroom was filled with joy and plenty of “awws” when Kim Blake brought in a very special visitor, a tiny orphaned lamb who was just four days old.
The students were absolutely delighted to meet the adorable little lamb, and seeing it dressed in its very own nappy made the experience even more special. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to get up close to such a young animal and learn a little about the care and attention it needs.
Kim shared that the lamb’s mother had become unwell and was unable to feed it, so she has lovingly stepped in to care for it. This is no small task, with Kim feeding the little lamb up to eight times a day! It is clear that the lamb is in very caring hands.
A huge thank you to Kim for sharing this precious little visitor with us and giving our students such a heartwarming experience. It was a lovely reminder of the kindness, patience and dedication involved in caring for animals, and a visit that certainly brought plenty of smiles to our classroom!
Last term, some of our Pathways students began a reading program with the Pre-K students in the Junior School in order to give them a chance to read expressively to a young audience while building connections with the Junior School. While they were nervous at first, the Pathways girls loved the friendly welcome the received from Pre-K and the connections they were able to build. The Pathways class will continue to do reading in the Junior School this term to continue to build connections and confidence in reading.
