From the Principal
MRS NICOLA TAYLOR
PRINCIPAL
In my first year of Principalship, my mother (a retired Government School Principal) gave me a little wooden sign which sits above the door in my office. It reads, "If you don't climb the mountain you can't see the view".
This quote was ringing in my ears as I ascended the magnificent granite formation known as Castle Rock in the Girraween National park recently with a group of Year 9 girls as part of the Explore Serve Journey experience. The climb was steady but steep in parts, the track clearly marked in the main, but less so when walking across the boulders. What was visible though was the change and transformation taking place across the year group as each girl attempted another set of challenges in this adventurous journey and how far they have come as a year group in a relatively short period of time.
Too often we focus on the climb, head down, one foot after the other, the limitations of the load we carry in a seemingly unending quest for the summit...

In some respects this can reflect life in general at times. We become absorbed in the now, distracted by the superfluous, adding little value to the end result. We focus on the process and may not see the product emerging. As the 2023 Academic Year draws to a close, three recent events highlight just how far many girls have come as they have journeyed through the teaching and learning activities both within and outside of the classroom.
The String Soiree showed the emerging strength of string ensembles and individual players across both the Junior and Senior School. One of the first music performance evenings without our Year 12, 2023 musicians. Whilst they were missed, their mentoring of younger girls to step up and take their place leading the ensembles was evident.
The Junior School ‘Time to Shine’ evening was a visible demonstration of the progress made and growth in each student reflecting their year of learning. Through the citations read and speeches shared, growth and progress in the four areas which make up a PLC Armidale experience was evident. Academic Rigour and Endeavour, The Creative & Performing Arts, Leadership & Challenge, Sport and Outdoor Education are important dimensions of the learning journey at PLC Armidale, student achievement individually and collectively was celebrated at this very special evening for our Junior School staff, students and parents.
The final morning of the Year 9 ESJ program provided a glimpse for parents of the journey of transformation their daughters have been on. From the video showcasing highlights, the art work decorating the walls, and the comment bank for each experience demonstrated that although much shorter than a full school year, the learning journey for each girl was still significant.
The following collage of comments make this quite clear. Some refer to specific activities such as canoeing, hiking or mountain biking, others refer to living in community with peers.
“I didn’t think I would enjoy it but it ended up being my favourite activity… Very exhausting and tiring but I’m glad I challenged myself and did it… I got to see everyone’s true selves, Hard but rewarding…
"It was very satisfying seeing the changes but definitely hard work… Held back tears but I made it… It was beautiful and terrifying, I loved all the different things we did- It made it so that there was something for everyone…
"I learned a lot about everything, myself and people I was surrounded by… It challenged everyone in different ways… It was something I have never done and now that I’ve experienced it, I’d do it again."
Over the next two weeks, rich learning experiences will be provided for all students throughout Activities Week and the Final Week signature events.
I trust that as you reflect on the year your daughter has enjoyed, whether in the Junior School or Senior School, as a Day Girl or a Boarder, you too will see her growth and progress, a dividend for the investment you have made to provide access to a PLC Armidale education.

Snake Season

These truly incredible creatures are beautiful, and could hold the key to many new medicines that will help humanity! We learnt about the unique features of these beautiful reptiles, where they live, how they eat, where they live and many other interesting facts. Mrs Kate Fittler
Our Stage 5 Commerce students have had a busy fortnight.
Last week, Chelsea Schaefer (who is a PLC Armidale parent and Principal Solicitor at Moin, Morris, Schaefer) gave an engaging and informative talk to them outlining what is involved in becoming a solicitor, how the law works in the local court, how judges are appointed and how laws are made. This gave the girls an idea of what Law is like in the real world, and Mrs Schaefer was upfront and honest in her answers to the girls' many questions.
This week they visited the local Armidale Court.
National Agriculture Day
Some of our Ag students went to the UNE as part of National Agriculture Day on Friday, 17 November to deep-dive into fun and educational topics and celebrate the incredible farm sector - an industry that's part of our lives every single day.
Boarding News
Boarding has been a fun and adventurous community this fortnight, with so many girls participating in activities both within the college and in the community. The fortnight started off in style, with Year 10’s formal. It was wonderful to hear about the achievements and connections that this intelligent and brave group of students have shared over their learning journey together.
As a follow up to the formal, while some girls were recovering from a night of high heels (and Crocks!) and dancing, others participated in the resurgence of a ping pong tournament, followed by a water fight in the garden. What a fun way to wrap up the weekend!
We also saw our Boarders shine within the String Soiree performances this fortnight, with particular mention to Bridie, Bell S, Emily and Mary. These girls work their instruments with exceptionalism and grace, and their skills were undeniable on the night. Thanks for representing our boarding community with your talent!
Last Sunday, we had a boarders BBQ with a guest visitor - Bailey, our dog! He was a hit, with all girls taking the time to say hello to him. Thanks to our chefs - Lilly M, Charli, Lily, Ellen and Mia; our sporting entertainment; and to all the boarders who set such a fun vibe for a Sunday afternoon.

Music News
Congratulations to Tiko Lay (AMusA)
Congratulations to Tiko Lay in Year 10 for achieving her Associate Diploma in Music Performance on the Flute last weekend!
This is an extraordinary achievement and a professionally recognised qualification. acknowledged with letters after the recipients names. Tiko has worked extremely hard and maintained a very disciplined practice schedule for over many months and years. The training, focus and preparation required to achieve the AmusA is extraordinary. It is indeed a life achievement, and to be awarded this as early as Year Ten is very impressive. Congratulations Tiko!
We are very proud of you!
New England Conservatorium Of Music Band Day
Our Year 7 girls enjoyed the NECOM Band Day on Friday, November 24.
All of Year 7 travelled to NECOM on Friday, November 24 to participate in the regional beginner concert band day.
This new NECOM initiative sees approximately 80 young players from schools across the region join together to make one extraordinary sound. The combined band rehearsed in the morning and then presented a concert after lunch. The instruments included flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, percussion and bass guitar.
2023 has been one of the most successful years of the Year 7 Instrumental program since it began in 2016. In the recent performance assessment task, I was very impressed at the consistently high standard of playing skills across the cohort, higher than I have observed in previous years at this stage in the program. Many of the girls in Year 7 have commenced private lessons and performing at InHouse Concerts.
Next year, girls from Year 7 will enter a wealth of PLC Armidale and NECOM ensembles, including the Armidale Youth Winds, the PLC Armidale Jazz Band and the PLC Armidale Beginner Jazz Band. It is so exciting to see such a dynamic and inspiring program that has become a pathway for all students to learn music and engage in a broad range of musical opportunities both in the College and wider communities.
Congratulations Year 7! I am so impressed with your achievements!
Mr Matthew Minter - PLC Armidale Director of Music
String Soiree
Congratulations to all our advanced classical musicians on presenting a fine String Soiree on Wednesday, November 15.
The tradition of fine classical music performance at PLC Armidale extends back over many decades, and to have so many high-level players in a relatively small school is quite extraordinary and reflects the culture of encouragement and high achievement in the College. Highlights of the evening were the Year 1-3 Silver Strings ensemble of beginning cellists and violinists, Bridie O'Neill and India Smith's solo performances, the Year 10 class presentation of Mr Minter's composition Solidarity, a work dedicated to the people of Ukraine, the chamber music performances from the Advanced Chamber Ensemble, the Piano Trio and the Senior String Trio, the vibrant and highly accomplished performances by the Senior and Junior String ensembles and the extraordinary rendition of The Erl King presented by the Cello Ensemble.
Congratulations and thank you to all the staff and peripatetic tutors involved, especially our ensemble leaders Joanna Fairs-Wu, Robert Jackson, Li Ling Chen, Robert Manley, Mrs Georgie Ostenfield and Mr Minter.

Time to Shine
The Junior School musical ensembles were in full flight at Time to Shine on Thursday!
Congratulations, Mrs Constance Dunham, for preparing such a high standard of choral items from our three Junior School choirs. The Treble Makers came alive in music theatre for their performance of School Song from the musical Matilda. The vibrant energy of a storm was captured beautifully in a highly polished performance of Greg Gilpin's Lightening, and the K-2 choir delighted audiences both in their own item and in the lovely combined K-6 and Bel Canto performance of What a Wonderful World. The Junior and Silver string ensembles also performed admirably.
Congratulations to Harriet Minter for achieving the Head of Junior School Award for Excellence in Music.
Harriet has achieved a very high standard on the violin for a young age and led our Junior String orchestra for years. Thank you, Harriet, for your contribution to Music in the Junior School.

PLC Armidale Foundation
Can you make a regular financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund?
In 2022, the College made a considered decision to restructure fees for students in Kindergarten to Stage 4 to expand accessibility to a PLC Armidale education.
The provision of scholarships on merit will extend the opportunity for even more young women of character and purpose to receive an outstanding education at PLC Armidale, the region’s pre-eminent school for young women.
The PLCA Foundation Committee is focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, with the intent of raising $130,000 for the school to allocate immediately in the next round of scholarship assessment.
As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructure, we ask that you consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.
Your gift will help the PLC Foundation Committee to offer these scholarships. We require significant and ongoing funding to ensure there is a continual capital base to support the program.
Donations will provide scholarships from as early as the 2024 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible. You can also subscribe to make a small regular automatic donation which will quickly add up over the years.
The generosity of the PLC Armidale community has enabled us to maintain and provide an excellent learning environment for generations of young women.
Giving makes a real difference to every student who attends PLC Armidale now and into the future. We thank you for your continued support as we foster and build a community that stands together.
If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 6770 1700 or email us at enquiries@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au
A gift to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund will open the door for many more exceptional young women to attend PLC Armidale and be equipped to lead a life of significance.
You can make a difference by donating today.
