Term 3 | Week 3 | 2023

From the Principal

MRS NICOLA TAYLOR

PRINCIPAL

Four pillars characterise a PLC Armidale education.

The first is a focus on academic endeavour with the goal of each year of instruction resulting in a year of progress across key learning areas, with literacy and numeracy a priority.

Secondly, providing rich and varied experiences in the Creative and Performing Arts or CAPA (Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts).

Leadership and experiences that challenge constitute the third pillar, with Sport and Outdoor Education the fourth.

Whilst some girls may have a natural interest or show talent in one or more of these areas, all are provided the opportunity to learn and grow in confidence through intentionally designed learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.

The past two weeks have showcased the accomplishment of girls across the College in each of these PLC Armidale pillars, providing a snapshot of endeavours academically, in CAPA, through Leadership&Challenge, Sport&Outdoor Education...

The range of girls, rather than a few individuals who shine in multiple areas, the engagement of staff working closely with students to help them achieve, and the support of parents throughout were apparent.

So what actually has happened in the past two weeks?

In addition to the teaching and learning of the regular classroom, the routine activities of the normal school day and the delight of hosting experience day students and our International Study Tour visitors across both Junior and Senior School, it has been a privilege to enjoy the following.

Academic: Analysing the NAPLAN results across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 where attainment this year has been reported to parents in a more simplified, streamlined way of four performance bands consistently across each Year Level: Needs additional support; Developing; Strong;  and Exceeding.

A summary report for PLC Armidale showing results across each domain for all girls assessed indicates that only 5 per cent of girls ‘need additional support’ with nearly all in just one of the domains assessed; Numeracy, Reading, Writing, Grammar & Punctuation, Spelling.

What was equally impressive was that well over 50 per cent of girls were reported as ‘exceeding’ in more than one domain assessed.

NAPLAN is only one measure of assessing academic growth. From our youngest students to our more senior girls, students have been encouraged this Semester to set goals in one or more areas where they would like to grow and improve. Teachers' regular feedback for class and coursework will help girls monitor their progress.

CAPA: The Year 12 Dance, Drama and Music Performance evenings showcased the creative strength and performance expertise each class is developing as they prepare for their HSC trial and final performance examination this term.

In a series of informal evenings, surrounded by their teachers, family and friends, each girl had the opportunity to show the depth and breadth of their creative endeavour through choreography, composition, individual or ensemble performance.  Save the date (Wednesday, 30 August) to attend Oeuvre, the signature event for displaying the process and product of our girls who choose to complete major independent project subjects as part of their HSC pattern of study..

It was a delight to attend the UNESAP Let’s Hang It acquisitive art competition award evening at NERAM last week. The work of 59 finalists, chosen from 500 entries, decorated the gallery walls, with three being that of  PLC Armidale students. Congratulations to Kalani Mudawage (Yr 7) awarded the prestigious Director's Choice award, Freda Schaeffer (Yr 3) awarded Highly Commended in the Primary Section and Navita Maher (Yr 9),  Finalist in the very competitive Secondary section.

Leadership & Challenge: The Junior School led the way with Guild gatherings throughout the week providing opportunities for girls across year groups within each guild to share experiences planned by their Year 6 Leaders. Welcoming the Study Tour students from Wuhan so warmly into the playground and classrooms throughout the week saw our girls taking the lead to make their new friends feel at home in the Junior School.

Our Junior School Sports Prefect, Rosie Woods demonstrated her leadership skills by proposing and  running a Guild football challenge which the Junior School girls were delighted to participate in. What a great practice opportunity for the annual Father / Daughter football match, which is a highlight of the annual Father’s Day breakfast taking place on Thursday, 31 August.

Across the Senior School the Student Representative Council (SRC) delegates from each year select a charitable organisation to raise awareness of and funds for. This week it was Year 7’s turn. The charity of choice, “Support the Girls” an Australian charity seeking to raise support and practical assistance for girls and young women through the provision of feminine hygiene clothing and products.

Mentored by their Pastoral Care teachers, Mrs Marilyn Faithfull, Mr Sam Azon-Jacometti and Mrs Emma Schaeffer, Year 7 lead the rest of the Senior School through a series of carefully planned and well-executed activities as part of their ‘Fun(d)raising Fare’ with activities as diverse as a photo booth, guessing competition, Cup a Cube, ball pit lolly hunt, fruit skewering and more. Congratulations, Year 7, for the teamwork, group endeavour and creativity clearly on display.

Sport & Outdoor Education: The annual IGSA Representative Hockey and Netball trips to Sydney provide an opportunity for PLC Armidale girls to display not only their proficiency in each sport but more importantly, the qualities of sportsmanship on display.

Following a match won resoundingly by our Junior Hockey girls, some parents from the opposing team stopped me and asked if this team was our ‘1st team’; they were genuinely surprised to hear that this was our Junior Representative team consisting of girls from Years 7 to 9 as their daughters were in a team made up almost exclusively of Year 9 student.

As we talked, these parents whose daughters attend a much larger all-girls school in Sydney commented on how fairly our girls played the game, the team unison on display throughout and that although the win for our team was impressive, they genuinely congratulated and thanked their opponents for the game.

Sport provides a vehicle for rich learning about the discipline of training, following the lead of the coach, accepting the call of an umpire or referee even when it doesn’t feel fair, and being gracious in defeat as well as in success. Although sport is not compulsory at PLC Armidale, the high level of participation of girls across both Junior and Senior Schools, whether in representative teams, the local competition teams or our more social sports, is commendable.

Our Year 9 girls will enjoy a taste of the Term 4 Explore Serve Journey program this weekend as we head to Coffs Harbour to participate in the Gutsy Girls Adventure Film Festival. An evening of short films celebrating the adventurous spirit of women and girls captured by independent filmmakers all around the world,  I’m sure, will resonate with our girls also.

Throughout the years of schooling, the strength of these four pillars: Academics, CAPA, Leadership&Challenge, Sport&Outdoor Education, underpinned by the firm foundation of Christian faith that characterises a PLC Armidale education, will help equip our girls to lead lives of significance.

Congratulations to

Georgia Whibley our Year 11 boarder (and national billy boiling champion) who competed and won the Intermediate Age Group Encouragement Award at the 2023 South Australia Heifer Expo last month. More than 180 students aged between 8 and 24 from across Australia and New Zealand participated in the event.

Sophie Bailey and Trista Dorrian who competed in the U14s NSW Tennis Teams Event held in Gosford last term. The North West Team came 9th overall, and the girls played exceptionally well. This was Sophie’s third time representing the North West at this event, and she said it was another great experience of outstanding teamwork.

Scarlett Loxley, who participated in the Curious Minds Winter Camp in Canberra during the holidays as part of a six-month opportunity program open to students interested in pursuing STEM careers and subjects. Scarlett was one of only 120 students from across Australia chosen to attend and was one of only five chosen to present during the camp on her chosen exploration: the detection of gravitational waves from black hole merger events using LIGO technology.

Year 10 students Arlie Bragg and Emily Blake, who participated in the first round of the Rotary International Public Speaking competition at the Armidale Bowling Club this week. Both girls delivered a five-minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice and a two-minute impromptu speech on 'real learning occurs outside of the classroom' . Both girls spoke with confidence and eloquence, with Emily declared runner-up

India Smith and Arlie Bragg who spent a week in Melbourne during the July school holidays rehearsing with Gondwana Voices and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, culminating in two performances in Hamer Hall. With only 40 places available, entry is via audition, and students need to be amongst Australia’s most capable young treble singers to be offered a place in this remarkable ensemble.

Kalani Mudawage who was chosen from 59 finalists from more than 500 student entries representing 49 schools in regional NSW to receive the prestigious Director's Choice Award in the current 'Let's Hang It' UNESAP exhibition at the New England Regional Art Museum. Kalani also won a recent competition to design a bookmark for Armidale Regional Council as part of its promotion for the War Memorial Library - the bookmark was printed and sold out!

Freda Schaeffer who was awarded Highly Commended in the Primary Section of the 'Let's Hang It'  competition and Navita Maher who was selected as a finalist in the senior secondary section.

All our Year 12 CAPA students who have performed in the last fortnight in preparation for exams - the calibre of your work is excellent, and we have enjoyed experiencing the results of your hard work and application.

Everyone involved in the Stage 6 Information evening. Our Astra Arts Centre was buzzing this week with families seeking subject selection recommendations before their daughters enter Year 11 - a crucial time in a teenager's education journey. Thank you to our specialist teachers who were on hand to share their knowledge and expertise. We look forward to another wonderful PLC Armidale community atmosphere at the Stage 5 Information evening on Wednesday, August 23.

Spotlight on Kindergarten - Mrs Geraldine Vanzella

The term began with much enthusiasm as Kindergarten returned to school, excited to see their friends. All year, we have been busy counting our days of learning, and last Friday was our 100th day of Kindergarten Celebration. The class was very excited about dressing up and engaging in many fun activities relating to the number 100. Now they are 100 days smarter. It is amazing to see their progress.

Our Maths learning this term has included exploring teen numbers through fun games, using base ten and concrete materials and sharing quantities between groups. Kindergarten has enjoyed reading and writing fabulous sentences about the classic story, Wombat Stew. The class also created freeze frames of different scenes from the text by using body position and facial expressions to tell the story.

This term, we started the Science unit ‘On the Move’. Kindergarten engaged in many movement and dance activities and described the different ways that people can move. Our future learning discoveries will explore how push and pull forces can be used to move objects in ways such as rolling, sliding, bouncing and spinning.

Creative Compositions from concepts about Persephone, grief, puppeteering, birth, The Great Gatsby and a Grandfather clock were amongst the fabulous work. Thank you to our dancers from year 9: Molly Chard, Daisy Donaldson and Jess MacMahon, who performed the SC compositions.

Not long now - our HSC Practical Examinations are in week 5 - August 17 and August 18. We wish them all well!!

In-House Concert and AMEB Exams

Congratulations to the following girls who performed in the Term 3 In-House Concert:

Margot Greatrex – Piano, Phila Wang – Cello and Piano, Shiloni Katta – Voice, Violin and Piano, Beth Birnie – Piano, Isabella Forrest – Cello and  Voice, Allegra May – Violin, Evelyn Barwick – Piano, Sophia Craig – Voice, Edith Clynch – Cello, Emma Birnie – Piano, Ava Greatrex – Violin, Sharni Webb – Voice, Amelie van der Werf – Cello, India Smith – Violin, Arlie Bragg – Cello, Sophia Marchant – Voice, Darcie Finlayson – Recorder and flute, Kate Loxley – Violin, Poppy McLaren – Tuba, Phoebe Imberger – Voice, Catherine Alcorn – Voice, Kaylee Swick – Violin , Gabrielle Cotterell – Voice, Grace Elbourne – Harp, Mylee Yu – Flute, Maddison Elbourne – Voice, Lilian Sue – Piano, Stephanie Blake – Clarinet, Ashlee Yu – Flute, Kate Loxley – Piano, Emily Blake – Flute

The standard of performances was, as usual, extremely high, and many of the girls have been very busy this week presenting their performance programs in the AMEB exams. This week we have had piano and woodwind exams most of the week, with more woodwind exams on the weekend and string exams going into next week. Best of luck to all girls in their AMEB exams.

It was really pleasing to see so many vocalists in the In-House Concert, with many girls presenting their very first performance. There is no instrument to hide behind when singing, and it takes tremendous courage and expertise to present vocal works, particularly when they are unaccompanied, as many were at the concert. It was also pleasing to see so many wind and brass players in the second concert, mostly graduates from our Year Seven Instrumental program who have pursued their instrumental studies for many years now.

CAPA Performing Arts Evening: Music at NECOM

Congratulations to Kaylee Swick and Gabrielle Cotterell (Music 2/Extension), Phoebe Imberger, Zoe Kelly and Catie Alcorn (Music 1) on presenting a highly accomplished HSC showcase recital on Monday, July 31. It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with our fine Year Twelve cohort in Music this year. They have approached the preparation of their HSC recital with steady focus and have each worked very hard to achieve a solid level of polish in their performances already. Thank you to Mr Jacometti, Mrs Dunham and Mrs Bradley for your expertise and the hours of work you have put into accompanying and coaching the girls. Thank you also, Mrs Fittler and our Year Ten students Arlie Bragg, India Smith and Bridie O'Neill, for playing in the musical ensembles for several pieces.

Well done to you all.

Mrs Constance Dunham

Into the Woods

During the winter break, Gabrielle Cotterell (Year 12), Nathea Ping Kee (Year 12) and Phoebe Imberger (Year 12) performed with Armidale Drama and Musical Society (ADMS)  in their production of Into the Woods by Sondheim, held at the Hoskins Centre (TAS). Gabrielle, and Phoebe were understudying the lead roles of Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood respectively, while Nathea lit up the stage as Milky White.

It was wonderful that the cast of Charlie and Chocolate Factory were able to attend the Closing Night of this production as it provided a live theatre experience for the girls to draw on, as many had never seen a live musical before.

Gabrielle, Nathea and Phoebe are to be congratulated on their exquisite performances and musicality.

Gondwana Voices

Last school holidays India Smith and I were lucky enough to travel down to Melbourne, the city of arts, culture and perfect coffee.

We were given the prestigious opportunity to sing in Gondwana Voices, a collection of some of Australia’s best young voices. Conducted by the renowned Lyn Williams, we began our week of rehearsals in ABC Melbourne’s Iwaki studios and Opera Australia, where we rehearsed and learnt our music for 5+ hours a day. Our repertoire consisted of Mehndelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a beautiful romantic work that follows the mesmerising Shakespearean tale of fairies, lovers and theatrics and Micheal Atherton’s Gondwana Classic, Shall We Dream.

We stayed just across the road from the rehearsal space and were accommodated with choristers that we grew really close to over our time there. During the last few days before our performance, we started to rehearse in Hamer Hall with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and its wonderful conductor, Jaime Martin.

After a week of rehearsals, early mornings, late nights, coffee and almond croissants, we cascaded onto the Hamer hall stage with ringing wine glasses in hand and covered in fairy glitter. Our two concerts were very successful and a magical experience for all the choristers.

India and I recommend Gondwana Choirs for any aspiring singers. Applications for it are open now.

More singing, more fun!

- Arlie Bragg - Year 10

Isla Biffin (Class of 2019) to play in Armidale

Don't miss this opportunity to see one of the world's best harpists (and Class of 2019 alumnae) Isla Biffin at the Armidale Playhouse on Saturday, 19 August 2023 - 5pm to 7pm. Tickets available through TryBooking

Currently studying at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, Isla recently won the Wales International Harp Festival competition. She will return to her hometown only briefly for this gorgeous harp recital.

The 'Whispers of the Harp' concert program features some of the classic works for harp that showcase the virtuosity and delicacy of the instrument: Hindemith Sonata for Harp, Spohr Fantasie, Granados Spanish Dance and Ernie's Legend.

Isla is also featured in the current issue (July) of Country Style Magazine where she talks about her time at PLC Armidale and how it inspired her to 'reach for the stars'.

We can't wait to see Isla in concert next month and hopefully back on our campus before she returns to Europe.

PLC Armidale Foundation

Can you make a regular financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund?

In 2022, the College made a considered decision to restructure fees for students in Kindergarten to Stage 4 to expand accessibility to a PLC Armidale education.

The provision of scholarships on merit will extend the opportunity for even more young women of character and purpose to receive an outstanding education at PLC Armidale, the region’s pre-eminent school for young women.

The PLCA Foundation Committee is focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, with the intent of raising $130,000 for the school to allocate immediately in the next round of scholarship assessment.

As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructure, we ask that you consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.

Your gift will help the PLC Foundation Committee to offer these scholarships. We require significant and ongoing funding to ensure there is a continual capital base to support the program.

Donations will provide scholarships from as early as the 2024 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible. You can also subscribe to make a small regular automatic donation which will quickly add up over the years.

The generosity of the PLC Armidale community has enabled us to maintain and provide an excellent learning environment for generations of young women.

Giving makes a real difference to every student who attends PLC Armidale now and into the future. We thank you for your continued support as we foster and build a community that stands together.

If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 6770 1700 or email us at enquiries@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au
