Lion's Roar Newsletter
Term 1 | Week 7  2024

From the Principal

MRS NICOLA TAYLOR

PRINCIPAL

Two recent reports addressing the general decline of children and young people's learning outcomes have attracted less media attention than warranted.

One report focused on the growth in academic performance of schools previously considered low-performing or disadvantaged, and the other on the impact on a young child's vocabulary development due to early exposure to screens.

The growth of academic performance in schools studied was attributed largely to explicit teaching practices. The Learning Journey at PLC Armidale has this at its core: strategies that enhance learning outcomes and foster personal growth. Explicit teaching and the unique advantage of an all-girls educational environment.

Explicit teaching is a pedagogical approach that emphasises clarity, structure, and direct instruction. It seeks to leave no room for ambiguity, ensuring that students grasp concepts thoroughly. This method enables teachers to provide clear explanations, model skills explicitly, and offer guided practice, allowing students to acquire knowledge efficiently.

One of the primary benefits of explicit teaching is its ability to cater to diverse learning needs. By breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps and providing clear instructions...

...teachers empower students to engage with the material confidently. This approach cultivates a sense of mastery and fosters a positive attitude towards learning, setting students on the path to academic success.

Moreover, explicit teaching promotes active participation and fosters a supportive learning environment. By clearly outlining expectations and providing constructive feedback, teachers create a culture of collaboration and mutual respect in the classroom. This emphasis on clarity and kindness not only enhances academic performance but also nurtures essential social and emotional skills, preparing students for success beyond the classroom. Clear is kind!

The second report - an Australian study, showed that for one minute of screen time, 3-year-olds were hearing seven fewer adult words, were speaking five fewer words themselves and were engaging in one less conversation. For 30 minutes of screen time, the numbers are scary, 70 fewer adult words heard, 50 fewer words said and five fewer conversations. The more words and conversations children have the better their early language development. Screen time or "technoference" may have a considerable impact on the acquisition of school readiness skills, in turn creating a challenge for teachers - a learning gap to be narrowed by consistent, whole school, high impact, explicit teaching practice.

The all-girls advantage is evident, as girls are empowered to strive and achieve academically. Girls are free to explore interests and passions without fear of judgement or bias. They have the opportunity to engage fully in classroom discussions, take on leadership roles, and pursue traditionally male-dominated fields such as STEM with confidence.

Explicit teaching and the all-girls educational advantage combine in a learning journey, which equips our students with the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to navigate the complexities of the world around them, growing compassionate leaders of tomorrow along the way...

Congratulations

Throughout the year, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the various interests and accomplishments of PLC Armidale girls. We will be aware of the experiences girls undertake to represent the College. We may not know about experiences and achievements in areas of interest outside of school. Please let our Communications and Marketing Manager, Mrs Arundale know. Mrs Arundale greatly enjoys telling the story of the quality and achievements of our PLC Armidale girls.

Kindergarten 2024

There has been a buzz of excitement in the Kindergarten classroom as the students have settled into school routines and being at school five days a week. It has been wonderful to see the girls so settled and organised as they have transitioned from Pre-K to ‘big school’.

The class have already started learning letters, sounds and sight words. We are thoroughly enjoying our Mathematics lessons with many ‘hands on’ experiences and group work activities. Our early unit focus has included numbers 1-5, shape patterns and dice dot patterns. We have also found a few little creature pets in the playground for our science unit, ‘Staying Alive’ and we are eagerly waiting for our caterpillars to transform into beautiful butterflies.

Kindergarten really enjoyed their visit to the Life Education Van, seeing Healthy Harold and learning about how to build friendships and care for others. After only a few weeks of school, it has been wonderful to see the girls making new friends and welcoming our two new students who joined us in Week 3.

Bell Time Reminders

Agricultural Antics

Our Livestock Team and Agriculture students have been busy.

Some of our newest Livestock Team members joined seasoned shower Lily McCosker at the Walcha Show last week. They proudly represented our College and came home with the Junior & Grand Champion Simmental Male and Junior & Grand Champion Red Poll Female awards.

While our Stage 4 Agriculture students welcomed sheep into the yards - kindly donated by Livestock Team managers Tim Light and Briony Looker

The college also received four Merino wethers as part of the National Merino Sheep Show and Ram Sale School Wether Challenge which they will now prepare for competition against 60 other school teams in August.

For more than two decades, our Livestock Team has been one of the most rewarding features of our College, and this year we would like to celebrate what has become one of the most successful and respected agricultural teams in the region. NAPLAN 2024

Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

NAPLAN 2024 will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March.

At PLC Armidale, tests will be completed at the following times for Years 7 and 9 in Week 7 and Week 8 of this term:

The exams will take place in the morning of each of these days.

NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.

In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will undertake activities to help students become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.

The public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration) is available to see the types of questions, tools and functions used in the NAPLAN tests.

Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website (https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k-10/understanding-the-curriculum/naplan/parent-information).

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact either myself or your child’s teacher.

Heads of Boarding

Welcome to week 7

As Co- Heads of Boarding we were fortunate to attend the ABSA Boarding Conference last weekend on the Gold Coast. It was an enlightening and inspiring experience, and the whole family came along. What stood out to us while connecting with Heads of Boarding from all over the country was the outstanding culture of community and connection that drives boarding at PLC Armidale.

Reminders

Please reach out to the house mother on shift with any concerns or updates about your daughter. You can contact the boarding house reception on  (02) 6770 1716 or the mobile on 0417 697 638.

If you haven’t already, please join our closed instagram page @plcaboarding for regular updates and pictures of boarding life. We welcome your feedback on what you’d like to see more of on this page.

You don't have to be a full or weekly boarder to experience PLC Armidale Boarding Life

CASUAL BOARDING $80 - from 3.30pm to 3.30pm - includes afternoon tea, dinner, breakfast, morning tea and lunch.

This opportunity is regularly taken up by PLC Armidale day students when families are travelling away from Armidale. This enables girls to continue to participate in school and their regular co-curricular commitments during this period of time and enjoy the boarding experience for a short while. The Boarding House welcomes this opportunity, even if only for a short period, as the time is helpful in developing stronger bonds through shared experiences. Those girls who are repeat casual boarders with set days on a regular basis will be given a personal space to decorate and stay in each term, just like weekly and full boarders.

EXTENDED STAY $25 - from 3.30pm to 7.30pm - includes afternoon tea and dinner.

The Extended Day Program allows PLC Armidale students to access a range of learning opportunities after school hours

under the supervision and care of our experienced Boarding and Academic staff. The program also enables our

students to participate in their PLC Armidale extra-curricular program (this does not include attendance at

appointments such as the dentist or doctor). Following their participation in the approved activity, students then

return to the Boarding House and attend dinner with the Boarders. The students will then undertake their

homework during prep time with the boarders.

You can find the Casual Boarding request form HERE and the Extended Stay request form HERE on our Parent Portal. We require 48 hours' notice if possible.

our fabulous Speech and Drama teacher, Mrs Kylie Alcorn...

...who recently received her Speech & Performance Licentiate Prac (Lspa) from the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) —the highest qualification it awards.

A record number of our girls from Year 4 to Year 11 will sit AMEB exams this year.

The Speech and Drama course aims to build essential life skills while boosting confidence. Our girls develop recital, presentation, and interview skills, along with fostering clear vocal expression and confident body language. 🎭

Engaging in creative dramatics, they step into improvisation scenarios, break out of their comfort zones and enjoy collaborative group work.

This not only enhances personal development but also serves as a fun way to build confidence in communication, making it a valuable addition to our College curriculum.

AMEB Licentiate Speech and Drama

Study for this qualification is in three parts, and I began studying in 2017 with Jan Patterson as my teacher.

I have been studying with Jan since I attended PLC Armidale (Year 12 1985). Each grade I sat both a written theory and practical performance exam.

Study for both Associate and Licentiate can either be as a performer or teacher and I chose teacher and obtained my Associate in 1990.

For my Licentiate, I first sat a practical examination (in 2017) where drawing from works published between 1914 and the present day, I performed a one hour and 20-minute program that included Verse Drama and a presentation on the teaching of speech and drama at secondary school/adult level.

Late last year, I sat a 4-hour written theory exam. This exam assessed my knowledge of matters such as current trends in pronunciation and colloquial speech, including strategies for overcoming negligent speech and the structuring of speech, drama and communication programs for secondary, adult and tertiary students, including teachers and specific groups in the workforce.

To complete my study, I submitted a dissertation titled 'Factors for Consideration in the Choice of Piece to Enhance Performance Potential'.

Obtaining the required marks across all three sections, I graduated with Distinction and was awarded a medal along with my teacher diploma to acknowledge this.

Obtaining my Licentiate was the culmination of a journey Jan and I have taken together over many years, and I will be forever grateful to her for all she nurtured in me.

Sport News

Mrs Lucy Donaldson

Head of Sport

Introducing our Sports Captains

This week - meet our Touch Footy Captains - Sophie Young and Tilly George

What is it about Touch Footy that makes it a great sport?

What makes touch such a great sport is the positive communication on the field and the uplifting spirit. Touch is a supportive sport where you can learn lots about teamwork and how the way you play and communicate with your teammates can deeply impact the outcome of the game. Touch footy requires a high level of fitness, which is improved throughout the season, which can benefit you in other sports.

What other sport do you like to play/watch?

We both are in the representative netball team for PLC, so we both love to watch and play it. We both enjoy watching Rugby Union and NRL and also cricket so we enjoy a variety of sports. We also enjoy early morning swimming and strength and conditioning.

In your opinion, what makes a good captain/sport leader?

Various values can contribute to a good captain, but we focus on positivity and encouragement and we try to be as energetic as possible to inspire our teammates to play their best and to be humble when winning and resilient when losing. We love being touch co-captains because touch footy is such a beneficial sport for the body and the mind.

Congratulations to ....

...the PLC Tildesley Tennis Team - Daisy Sheedy, Holly Sheedy, Sophie Bailey, Trista Dorrian, Imogen Scanlon and Sophia Marchant.

It was an action-packed two days of tennis at Pennant Hills Park. The event brings 26 independent girls schools together, predominantly from Sydney. The standard is exceptionally high and our PLC girls certainly did us proud.

A special mention to Sophie Bailey, who qualified through to the fifth round of matches, which is the best result for a PLC Armidale student. The girls should be commended on their sportsmanship and consistent support and cheering for each other—for a small team, we sure could make a noise. It was an absolute pleasure to accompany these girls and watch them shine on the tennis court! PLC Armidale placed 11th overall, which was a fabulous effort.

... the Junior School IPSHA Swimming Team - Evie Donaldson, Georgina Arundale-Fuller, Georgiana Ballard, Isla Douglas, Annabella Wysel, Phoebe Butterworth, April Ferguson, Audrey Belford, Elouise Westermarck and Annika Ballard who all swam beautifully at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Tuesday March 5. It was such a fun and memorable experience for them all, with many personal best times being the swum and heat ribbons they received. Mrs Westermarck and Mrs Donadson were so proud of each girl stepping out of their comfort zone and making the most of the opportunities.

...Steph Blake - Athletics

Steph showcased her talents at the NSW State Athletics Championships last weekend in Sydney. She achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the sub-60-second barrier (clocking in at 59.75 seconds) in her 400m run, a goal she had been aiming for. This result shows why she has already secured her place at the nationals for this event.

Additionally, Steph demonstrated her talent in the 800m race, convincingly winning her heat. Although she narrowly missed the qualifying time for nationals in this event, her exceptional performance was commendable. We are immensely proud of you, Steph.

Coming up in Term 1:

IGSA Swimming Carnival, Sydney - Friday, 22 March (Senior School)

Whole School Cross Country - Wednesday, 27 March

IPSHA Cross Country - Saturday, 6 April (Junior School)

Winter Sports (Term 2 and 3)

This week, the Winter Sport choices will be sent out to students (senior school) and parents (junior school). Please take the time to discuss these with our daughter and the commitment involved. We encourage all girls to participate in sport.

Please, at any stage if you are unsure of anything or need clarification, send me an email ldonaldson@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au and I will endeavor to get back to you as soon as possible. Alternatively, Mrs Stephanie Fahy at the Senior School Reception senior_school_administration@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au will be able to assist as well.

Head Lice Alert

There has been an outbreak of head lice within the College. It is recommended that parents please check all their children at home and treat them if needed.

Signs of lice infestations include finding yellowish or white eggs that are the size of sesame seeds. They are not easily brushed away. Black or brown eggs are dead. There may be a red rash or red bite marks at the back of the neck or behind the ears.

If head lice are found, do not be alarmed, it is easily treated with head lice treatment from the chemist.

Any articles that come in close contact can harbour lice. Examples are clothes, towels and bed linen. All items need to be washed in hot soapy water or head lice soaking solution and then sun dried.

A five-step process can control head lice:

1. Detect: head lice and their eggs

2. Treat: with a head lice treatment

3. Prevent: use a lice comb to remove eggs

4. Repeat: the process after seven days

5. Clean: any articles in close contact.

As head lice are contagious it is suggested that you treat all members of the family at the same time.

Letter to the editor

This International Women's Day, the company I currently work for (AnteoTech) was featured in a short Docu Film series called "She Made It". It is part of the QLD Department of Manufacturing's initiative to empower women into taking on careers withing the manufacturing sector.

On International Women's Day, as I attended the official launch of the series last week and witnessed the incredible stories of women breaking barriers in the field, I couldn't help but think about the significant changes in opportunities over the years. These are the kind of possibilities that weren't readily accessible or open to us during my school days.

I'm reaching out to pass along the link to the documentary series, with the hope that it might be shared. The stories showcased offer valuable insights into diverse career paths within Engineering, Sciences, and Business. I believe this series could provide a meaningful perspective for the girls at PLC Armidale, as they think of work experience opportunities or select their subjects for Stage 6,  shedding light on the myriad of opportunities available to them and inspire them to explore unconventional career paths.

The series is available here.

PLC Armidale Foundation

Can you make a regular financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund?

In 2022, the College made a considered decision to restructure fees for students in Kindergarten to Stage 4 to expand accessibility to a PLC Armidale education.

The provision of scholarships on merit will extend the opportunity for even more young women of character and purpose to receive an outstanding education at PLC Armidale, the region’s pre-eminent school for young women.

The PLCA Foundation Committee is focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, with the intent of raising $130,000 for the school to allocate immediately in the next round of scholarship assessment.

As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructure, we ask that you consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.

Your gift will help the PLC Foundation Committee to offer these scholarships. We require significant and ongoing funding to ensure there is a continual capital base to support the program.

Donations will provide scholarships for the 2025 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible. You can also subscribe to make a small regular automatic donation which will quickly add up over the years.

The generosity of the PLC Armidale community has enabled us to maintain and provide an excellent learning environment for generations of young women.

Giving makes a real difference to every student who attends PLC Armidale now and into the future. We thank you for your continued support as we foster and build a community that stands together.

If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 6770 1700 or email us at enquiries@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au

A gift to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund will open the door for many more exceptional young women to attend PLC Armidale and be equipped to lead a life of significance.

You can make a difference by donating today.

MINISINGERS is the perfect introduction to music, singing and performance for children in Years K – 2 and is ideal for young children wishing to learn an instrument in the future.  Singing in a fun and friendly environment with others helps every young person develop their confidence, self-esteem, communication and social skills.  There are lots of fun action songs and musical games which develop skills in pitch and rhythm, concentration, co-ordination and memory.

Rehearsals take place at the Armidale Teachers’ College each Wednesday of the school term from 4:00 – 4:45pm.  Fees per term are $62.00.

CANTILENA is for students in Years 3 – 6, performing more complex unison melodies, 2 and 3-part songs and providing additional performance opportunities as the choristers gain in confidence.  Cantilena rehearsals take place at the Armidale Teachers’ College each Wednesday of the school term, from 4:00pm – 5:00pm.  Fees per term are $83.00.

Choral program members join for a whole year of activity including 9 weekly rehearsals during school terms, are guided by specialist music educators, and present concerts throughout the year.  Active and Creative Kids vouchers are accepted.
