The PLC Armidale grounds and gardens clearly mark the change of seasons.

An early morning frost followed by a brilliantly sunny day saw girls, both big and little, playing in the piles of autumn leaves carpeting the grounds during our weekly whole-school morning tea this week.  The PLC Armidale calendar also marks the change of seasons ...

With the athletics carnival, parent-teacher interviews, concerts and whole-school Mother’s Day breakfast over this past fortnight, the Eisteddfod season begins.

With this disruption, it is easy to question if there is any gain or benefit to the girls and our learning culture.

The answer is yes - if we acknowledge that learning occurs both within and outside the classroom. And if we look at the worthwhileness of the Creative & Performing Arts in developing a wide range of splinter skills which can strengthen learning in the classroom and equip our girls well for their future endeavours.

Skills such as active listening; concentration; memorisation; confidence through performance; the self-discipline to practice; the integration of both hemispheres of the brain; and success in an area of strength, especially if some other academic work is found to be more difficult.

While it is challenging to manage the continuity of our teaching and learning program with students in and out of classes to compete in the various disciplines and sections, we ensure our girls can catch up on any core work missed through our See Saw apps and the CANVAS platform.

The Eisteddfod and other community activities provide opportunities for the College community to be on display.  Raising awareness of who we are, what we do, and the talent of our people is an important part of why PLC Armidale is the school of choice for many families.

But most importantly, it is an opportunity to engage with the wider community and share our blessings with them. The benefit received from participating in and serving these events is far greater than the time and effort given.

As part of the PLC Sydney 135th Anniversary Celebration, PLC Armidale has been invited to participate in two key events. A Science Fair and an International Music Concert.  These events will see many of our girls in Sydney from now until Thursday.

PLC Armidale has always been a strong supporter of the creative arts in the community, and it continues to be an important part of our College culture.

“Tell me, and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me, and I learn.”         Benjamin Franklin.

Thank you to those who attended our Mother’s Day breakfast this week, followed by a visit to classrooms in the Senior School and Chapel in the Junior School.

We are grateful to those Senior School liaison parents who suggested the morning tea be extended across the whole school in keeping with our commitment to more whole school experiences. Despite having to meet in two venues due to the early morning frost mentioned previously! There was a warmth of connection and engagement in each venue, with the girls excited to share the gifts they had made.

As an all-girls school, it is fitting we honour the capable, strong, warm, loving and caring women who influence and impact our girls and community in so many ways.

To all our mothers, grandmothers and women who nurture, thank you and enjoy a moment to be celebrated this Sunday.

Congratulations to `

The entire College community for engaging with enthusiasm in the many events in the past weeks - in particular...

Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to all those who participated in the whole-school Athletics Carnival - with a big congratulations to Wilkie, the overall winning guild for the third year running, and to all those who attended to lend their support and encouragement to the girls.

All our age champions were announced at a special assembly this week and are listed in the Sports Section.

Once again, our P&F did a wonderful job ensuring everyone was well-fed while raising money for our College.

A gallery of gorgeous photos from the day can be found here on our Parent Portal.

Armidale Eisteddfod opening night

Congratulations to all those who submitted entries and performed in the Armidale Eisteddfod opening event, the Composition Awards evening - it was a sea of green. With a record 72 entries, 28 finalists took part, 14 of which were PLC Armidale entrants. Our girls from Stage 3 to Stage 6 featured strongly. Four sections were won by PLC Armidale girls (Molly Chard, India Smith, Kaylee Swick and Catie Alcorn) with Catie also receiving the Adjudicator’s Choice overall prize.

We also take out hats off to the Eisteddfod organisers, a band of very dedicated volunteers we are privileged to have in the Armidale community.

PLC Performs

Congratulations to everyone involved in our 2023 PLC Performs - the DKC and AAC were abuzz!

This annual concert serves as a dress rehearsal for the various Eisteddfod sections ensembles, and individuals take part in.

A very compressed program demonstrated the participation and strength of the performing arts across the College; choral groups, dance troupes, drama, and music ensembles showcased the quality of our programs and the teamwork of our girls.

Thank you also to our dedicated CAPA tutors for their continuous commitment to our girls

2023 Whole-School Mother's Day breakfast

On Thursday, May 11, we invited all our mums to join their daughters on Campus for breakfast, a Chapel Service and classroom visits. Our girls made gorgeous keyring and brooch gifts to give and wrote heartfelt messages in handmade cards (and in colour chalk on the pavement).

Many more photos ( we attempted to take a mother/daughter photo of everyone) can be found here in our Parent Portal gallery.

Below is an outline of the Term 2 events currently scheduled. You can view the school calendar via the PLC Armidale App or Parent Portal.

Explore Serve Journey

Last weekend, 11 girls participating in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh International Award attempted the inaugural PLC Armidale 3 Peak Challenge.

This involved summiting three mountains over three days in Queensland's spectacular Scenic Rim.

In total the girls climbed over 2300m in altitude and were most proud of successfully reaching the summit of Mount Barney (one of Australia's most difficult mountains), in a time of 11hours and 51minutes. We faced our fear of heights while walking along exposed ridge lines, supported each other when our tent collapsed in the middle of the night and were able to explore places so few people even know exist.

It really was an amazing adventure.

Rotary Public Speaking Competiton

On the 25th of March 2023, I travelled to the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC) to take part in the State Finals for the Rotary Public Speaking competition. This was the fourth and last round of the competition, beginning with a local competition for Armidale back in September 2022, followed by two consecutive competitions with wider district involvement. Each round had roughly four competitors, and our speeches had to address at least one of the Rotary Four Way Tests: “ Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships?  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”. I addressed the second and fourth test in my speech, discussing the process of immigration into Australia and including my personal experiences surrounding this controversial topic. There were two parts to the competition, where at every level, a 5 minute prepared speech and a 2 minute improvised speech were presented.

There were four other finalists at Tamworth, all of them from different regions in New South Wales. There was some stiff competition, with both the prepared speech and improvisation rounds. Even though I couldn't walk away with a victory, I am incredibly grateful for this amazing opportunity to participate in this competition. A special thanks to Mrs Patterson, Mrs Shumack and Ms Flanagan for supporting me throughout this journey, and to the Armidale Rotary club for supporting me throughout the competition as well. It was an incredibly enjoyable experience, where I was able to share my experiences with a wider audience and have the opportunity to communicate to people at a high level. I absolutely recommend anyone who is interested in Public Speaking opportunities to participate in the competition later this year, and to develop their public speaking skills!

Some thoughts from our Year 5 girls......

This is what Mother’s Day means to me

"Mother’s Day is such a lovely day for all mothers around the world. For Mother’s day, in my household, we always start with tea and biscuits. We dip biscuits in our tea and give Mum her presents in bed. After we have a warm, yummy breakfast, we go to church and then go somewhere for morning tea. Mother’s Day is a lovely heart-warming time of the year."

Annabella

"Mother’s Day is a memorable and heartfelt day for me. Mum normally wakes up in a bed covered in presents and family. Mum opens her carefully written cards and beautifully thought out gifts. For me Mother’s Day means a chance to thank mums around the world for being so caring and well, just there for us. My Mum keeps all of her special cards in a particular drawer and treasures them forever. Mother’s Day is a day your mum will never forget."

Georgina

"Mother’s Day to me means giving and sharing love. You bond with mum and make her feel great because when you give mum that love she shares it and that is special. My mum loves me and always does everything but on Mother’s Day you thank her and repay her. You just love her for everything she has done for you. When I say Happy Mother’s Day mum smiles like the sun and that is special to me."

Georgiana

"Mother’s Day is to celebrate our dear mothers who, from their perspective, have given their whole life just for us. We celebrate the times they have battled our torture and tantrums when we were a kid, cooking from perhaps 6am just trying to make your favourite lunch but the biggest thing is being our hero. But to be honest, there is a bigger thing than that, way bigger. Their love, their care, hugs, kindness, bravery and courage. My mum is the best mum in all the galaxies and universes."

Prodipta

"Mother’s Day is a day when your mum is celebrated for all the hard work she does for you. Kids don’t have a day because they don’t get dinner and get the clothing sorted. It is mums that do the hard work."

Stella

"Mother’s Day is a day when you give gifts to your mum. I like Mother’s Day because when I see my mum happy, it brings me joy."

Khadija

This what we have been doing so far in Year 5

"This year I have found that Year 5 has absolutely changed my thinking. Each day we get to read for 20 minutes and do history for a period or two. We have been reading ‘The night they stormed Eureka’ by Jackie French. This is now my favourite book! We also get to do maths each day, and Mrs Hey makes it better every session."

Evie

"For the past couple of years I have never really found an interest in reading but this year in Year 5 I have lots of time to read during class. First I started reading novels that my friends had suggested I should read. But I never really enjoyed any of them, so I decided to try something different. Graphic novels. I prefer graphic novels at the moment because the pictures and the onomatopoeia keep me interested and locked in. My favourite series of graphic novels is the Babysitters Club."

Lucie

"In Year 5 I like how all of the teachers are so helpful and caring to me. I love that everyone in Year 5 is so kind to me. I like the curriculum and I love having Mrs Hey to take me on the Year 5 journey."

Pippa

"I have been enjoying reading a book called Drama. I get to read it each day at school. The main character Callie gets upset when a boy in her play gets all of the attention when he falls over another girl on stage. I’m hoping there are more books like this to continue on with when I finish it."

Mary

Why I like PLC Armidale

"PLC is different from my last school, but personally, I like it a lot better here.

I made friends with Emily, Rose and Khadija within the first couple of weeks, and everyone is really nice. Mrs Hey is probably the best teacher I have ever had, and Year 5 is a lot of fun. Sometimes I miss my old friends, but the busy days at PLC soon distract me. When I moved here I was really nervous but within a couple of days, I forgot those old nerves. PE with Mrs Donaldson is a lot of fun and I always look forward to Mondays. Thank you Mum for sending me here!"

Sophia

"I’ve made many friends here at PLC which, is one reason why it is very different from my last school. We have a good class routine which allowed me to settle easily. Although PLC is amazing I’m still getting used to the uniforms. I can’t tie a tie properly, but I can always wear the elastic ones if I need to. I love the hot special lunches, every day there is a new one. If you don’t like the hot special for that day, there is still yummy back-ups you can always order. But what I love most about PLC is my amazing class and teachers."

Rose

"At my old school it was like high school, you had to go to different rooms and bring your pencil case, diary and homework book if it was Monday. There were only school lunches, no-one brought a packed lunch to school. I like PLC because I have made friends with the nicest girls. Being in Year 5 is a happy place to be, there is always something interesting going on."

Emily

"This year I have enjoyed so many things. At PLC we are given so many new and exciting opportunities. I am glad to be going to a school that allows me to try new things. While some things didn’t really hook me, I have liked most of them."

Armidale Eisteddfod 2023

The Armidale Eisteddfod commenced on Wednesday, 10 May and concludes with the Gala Concert on Sunday 18 June. PLC Armidale is heavily involved in the Eisteddfod with many individual entries and school ensemble groups.

Attached is a timetable of events various Senior School ensembles are participating in. These performances are scheduled for 24 May, 1st and 6th June. Please note that in addition, some ensembles may be chosen to perform at the Gala Concert on June 18.

If an event is held on a weekend or commences in the evening, students, other than boarders, are to make their own way to the venue.  Please check the timetable carefully to note where independent travel arrangements are required to ensure that the girls arrive ready to perform at the times stated overleaf. Estimated performance times have been included to assist with scheduling. They are a guide only and must not be relied on.

Individual Eisteddfod Performances

A reminder to parents: If your daughter has entered the Eisteddfod as an individual, she must provide a note in advance notifying the College of the time and date of her event/s - 2023 via this link Armidale Eisteddfod Absences Registration

It is expected that students entered in individual events will make their own way to the Eisteddfod for their events. All performers should arrive 15-30 minutes before the commencement of individual sections.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the various Eisteddfod performances with tickets available at the venues.

We are looking forward to some exciting performances and hope you can join us if at all possible.

PLC Performs

Our dress rehearsal for the eisteddfod season was a jam-packed evening of performance. If you could not get to our campus to see it - here is a summary of the evening,  which should inspire you to watch some, if not all, of these acts during the coming competitions.

Pre-K to Year 2

Our girls worked super hard throughout Term one to learn some new moves!

They took the audience on a journey to have some fun in the sun while the audience sat back, relaxed and enjoyed a swim at the beach.

JS Dance Ensemble - 3-6

The 3-6 Dance Ensemble has been having fun throughout term one, focusing on the importance of teamwork and unison as a part of dancing! The girls took our audience one way…..or another.

Senior Dance Ensemble - Contemporary

The Senior Dance Ensemble has had a busy term learning different features of contemporary dancing. They worked together to complete some team lifts and group choreography. The girls portrayed the story of finding the little boy in the grass.

HSC Dance Group - Contemporary

Our 2023 HSC Dance cohort at PLC has six talented students who are candidates for their Higher School Certificate in Dance. As part of the HSC Dance course, all students must perform a technical dance called the Core Performance. This work is to show their technical abilities and performance quality. Usually, they would perform this work solo, for PLC Performs it was modified slightly so that it was a group dance. The accompaniment was the song Burn, from the musical Hamilton.

Senior Strings

The Romanian Dances is a collection of traditional Romanian Dances that were originally played on a fiddle or shepherd's flute. Bartok originally transcribed these for piano and later orchestrated them for string ensemble. This week, the PLC Senior Strings will present this work in the Sydney Town Hall. For PLC Performs our very talented Head Prefect, Chiyo Brown, played the solo violin part.

Cello Ensemble

This work is an arrangement of Sentimental Journey by Gershwin. Mr Jackson attended a concert presented by the cello section of the world’s leading orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic. He liked the piece so much that he went home and wrote out all the parts for his own students.

Bel Canto

Bel Canto - Our first choral performance of the evening was by Bel Canto Voices, performing The Water of Tyne, a traditional folk song from the North-East of England, arranged by Michael Neaum. The song is sung by a young woman who is lamenting the fact that her true love is on the opposite bank of the River Tyne, and she cannot get to him except by ferry.

JS Speech and Drama Play

Miss Sarah Waters, head girl from 2022 has been working hard with the Junior School girls this year, teaching them Speech and Drama. Lucie, Stella and Maria from Year 5 will perform their group play in the Speech and Drama section of the Armidale Eisteddfod soon. Fitting in with our senior school musical this year, they performed an excerpt from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Macbeth Duologue

Kimberley and Rachel were selected to perform in the Regional Shakespeare Carnival held in Port Macquarie. They chose a poignant part of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth in Act I, Scene vii, where Macbeth’s conscience is troubled by the concept of killing King Duncan, though Lady Macbeth’s persuasion is convincing, and they plot to murder their King.

K-2 Choir

The K-2 Choir sang Wind on the Hill by Victoria Ebel, featuring a beautiful oboe obligato from Ms Li Ling Chen and finished with Monkeys in the House by Casey Kadlubowski (arranged by Cyndee Giebler) about some young children whose house has been taken over by naughty monkeys!

3-6 Choir

Our 3-6 Choir will now perform Mosquitoes by Wendy Ireland. This dramatic, tango-like piece is about a lady who invites a friend over for dinner, only to be overrun with mosquitoes.

TrebleMakers

The Treble Makers Vocal Ensemble sung Whisper by Greg Gilpin -  an upbeat song about having to discuss something important, but needing to do it all in a whisper.

Silver Strings

The silver strings ensemble is the showcase of our Stage One String Program. The students in our Year 1 and 2 classes all have an opportunity to learn string instruments, and many of them take up the instrument and join our ensemble program. Georgie Ostenfeld teaches the Stage One String Program and we are sure many of the young players who are taking their first steps in music will be dazzling us with their achievements during the years ahead.

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble is comprised mostly of students who have grown out of the Year 7 Instrumental Program and have now been playing their instruments for a few years and performing with PLC and NECOM ensembles, as well as solo performances. Mr Sam Jacometti has inspired the girls in this ensemble, and it was so exciting to see the group go from strength to strength in their first years. They played that funky music at PLC Performs.

Year 7/8 Music Class

While technically not a choir - the Year7/8 music class were inspirational when they performed a piece inspired by the Eureka stockade, which took place in Ballarat during the height of the Australian Gold Rush. Lively and gritty, the piece is soaked in the style of Celtic music and Australian bush poetry.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

In Act III, scene ii, Helena is thwarted by both Demetrius and Lysander announcing their undying love for her. What she doesn’t know is that Puck has placed potion on their eyes for this to happen. Hermia is confused because the man she has come away to the forest to marry apparently now hates her. There certainly is trouble in love. Also performing in the Regional Shakespeare Carnival, was this very funny rendition with physical humour played by Teya, Bridie, Arlie and Emily from Stage 5 Drama.

Senior Choir

The Call of the Country is a composition  I wrote. It is inspired by the peace and freedom of the country and, in particular, my property near Lake Keepit.  I conducted this while Ms Chen played her beautiful piano accompaniment.

The Secret Migration is a beautiful choral work by acclaimed Australian choral composer Dan Walker. This work depicts the journey of migrating birds that travel vast distances across the oceans. At certain moments in the work the three parts of the choir each sing the melodies in slightly different times, creating a polyphonic effect that captures the feeling of the waves and the sky.

Congratulations to all our girls on your outstanding performances, it is always such a pleasure to witness such a brilliant standard from across all year groups.

International and 'Pathways' News

Amy Chiu

Pathways Administrator

At the beginning of each term, Mrs Sennett, Head Teacher of the PLC Pathways program, visits Armidale from Bathurst and stays for a couple of weeks to connect and meet with new students. It has always been a great opportunity for both Pathways students and staff to be at one place working towards the same goal.

A difficult conversation needed to happen in the last several days. To my surprise, the girls managed it well and did thorough and thoughtful reflections on the incident maturely. They were able to discuss uncomfortable parts of the incident and own their responsibilities. It takes great courage to be vulnerable in front of each other and also great trust towards their peers. I really admired how they were able to articulate abstract feelings with logical thinking.

The incident provided an opportunity for our teachers to bring into relevant parables from the Bible to teach the students to be kind to others and to be forgiving and understanding.

We look forward to seeing the growth of the students from here.

PLC Armidale Foundation

PLC Armidale is appealing to members of our community to consider a financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.

This year we introduced regular giving into the school's tax-deductible scholarship fund options.

This fund has significant potential in assisting the school to provide funded scholarships to a recipient from around the state whose life would be changed by the opportunity to access a PLC Armidale education.

Even just a small amount donated regularly can quickly add up to an impressive total.

The PLC Armidale Foundation Committee has set a target of $100,000 through regular giving (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) from our parents and staff.

We believe this figure is attainable with the current number of members within our school community.

Donations can be made by clicking here.

Donations will provide scholarships and bursaries from as early as the 2024 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible*, and donations made before the end of the financial year are eligible for deduction immediately.

As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructuring, it is our hope that you can consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.

If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, please contact (02) 6770 1727 or email our enrolments team on enrolments@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au

A gift to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund will open the door for many more exceptional young women to attend PLC Armidale.

You can make a difference by donating today. Thank you, and please give generously!
