Lion's Roar Newsletter
Term 1 | Week 5 2024
From the Principal
MRS NICOLA TAYLOR
PRINCIPAL
A news headline yesterday designed to capture attention; topical, an absolute statement loaded with assumptions rather than accuracy.
With more single-sex schools going co-ed, what is the evidence for gender-segregated education?
More correctly, the headline should have read, 'With more all-boys schools going co-ed… There are very few examples of all-girls schools choosing to go co-ed. A girls school and boys school with a common ‘owner’, usually a church more likely.
Why do all-girls schools choose to remain all-girls?
One of the primary reasons all-girls schools remain schools of choice is the commitment to the enabling and empowering of young women.
Girls in all-girls schools tend to exhibit higher levels of confidence, assertiveness, and academic achievement.
By eliminating gender stereotypes and fostering an environment where girls feel free to explore their interests without fear of judgment, we create a space where they truly flourish.
Our all-girls context helps create a classroom environment conducive to learning, leading to strong academic outcomes across the years that our NAPLAN results each year testify...

Beyond academics, all-girls schools cultivate a strong sense of community and sisterhood among students.
In this environment, girls are supported as they navigate their social world. They are encouraged to understand and support each other, fostering lifelong friendships and a network of connections within and across the years as gatherings of PLC Armidale Old Girls show.
All-girls schools offer unique opportunities for leadership development. Without the presence of boys, naturally reserved girls are more likely to take on leadership roles providing valuable experience which prepares them for future success in a diverse and competitive world.
Co-education has its place, it is healthy for parents to have a choice of schooling options. Research indicates potential benefits for boys with girls in the classroom, however little of this research confirms a like gain for girls. At PLC Armidale, we seek to provide a supportive and empowering environment designed for girls, about girls, equipping them with skills, confidence, and the resilience needed to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
Thank you for entrusting us with the education and care of your daughters. Together, we are shaping girls and young women to lead lives of significance.
Congratulations
Throughout the year, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the various interests and accomplishments of PLC Armidale girls. We will be aware of the experiences girls undertake to represent the College. We may not know about experiences and achievements in areas of interest outside of school. Please let our Communications and Marketing Manager, Mrs Arundale know. Mrs Arundale greatly enjoys telling the story of the quality and achievements of our PLC Armidale girls.
Congratulations to ....

Senior School News
Mrs Kate Clynch
Head of Senior School
It has been such a busy start to the term, and it has been wonderful to see our Senior School students taking it all in their stride.
With the second half of the term now on the horizon, we can see assessment tasks that need to be completed, and a higher level of academic demand on students. It is normal for students to feel apprehensive about some assessment tasks, and to feel the pressure of having to complete multiple tasks during a similar timeframe. As parents, please talk to your daughters about what they have coming up over the next couple of weeks, and check in to see how they are travelling. Remember, assessment tasks are not about perfection - they are about seeing where are student is at, at a particular point in time. They are not to be feared, but are part of the regular school day. Regular school work is just as important as scheduled tasks, and we aim to create a balance between the two.
We have also confirmed our dates for Parent Teacher interviews for Semester One:
Year 7 and Year 12 in Week 9, Term 1
Wednesday 27th March from 4pm to 7pm
Location: Senior School Library
Boarder parents - Week 1, Term 2
Monday 29th April from 2pm to 4pm (Staff Day)
Location: Senior School Library
Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 - Week 1, Term 2
Wednesday 1st May from 4pm to 7pm
Location: Senior School Library
These interviews are a great way to connect with your child’s teachers, and are an important part of the relationship between home and school.
The booking links for these events will be sent out closer to the dates, and bookings will be via the ‘School Interviews’ online booking system that we used in 2023. If you are unable to attend a scheduled session, please contact Steph Fahy at Senior School Reception (seniorschool@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au) to discuss an alternative option.
Over the course of the last week or so we have commenced our ‘Pastoral Care Phone Calls’. Our aim with these calls is to simply touch base with each family in the Senior School, and get some feedback on how the year has started for your daughter. If you have a missed call from the school, and would like to speak to a member of the Pastoral Care team for your daughter, please call us back on (02) 67701700.
We are looking forward to a fantastic second half of the term!
Friendship Camp 2024
On Wednesday, 7 February, Year 7 started off the day with a game of Newcomb Ball while waiting for everyone to be present.
Once everyone was there, our Peer Support leaders took over, and everyone got bedazzled and dressed up in our group colours for our photos.
The next activity was a physical activity, we played bench ball. After Bench ball, Teya and Emily lead everyone in a game called "drawing imposter" that was really fun but sadly had to end for recess!
After a recess of vegemite scrolls and mini quiches, we went back inside for the newspaper dress activity. We broke up into our Peer Support groups and planned who would be the model, what our dress would look like and who would be the spectator. Then we got started. Each group decided to do a queen.
The purple group did an Egyptian time traveller queen, played by Emma, and the Blue group had Her Majesty Queen Victoria, played by Victoria. Yellow group was a beautiful Japanese Queen by Lola. The Orange group had a woman singer/president by Laura. The Pink group dressed Juliette in a lovely dress to be a writer, a fashion designer, a vet and a lawyer.
We then worked in our Peer Support groups to discuss what you would do in a situation of not including someone, or someone doing the wrong thing. We had to change the scenario and act out what we could do better.
After dinner, we met in the Ad Astra centre, and we found out our next activity was making a movie in our peer support groups. Everyone chose to do a thriller-comedy film! Unfortunately, the prep girls would have heard a lot of screaming coming from the groups and were probably wondering what on earth was going on! When we were done, we went back to the Astra Arts Centre and showed our movie productions to everyone.
The highlights of the camp were dancing at the cultural meeting place with Mr Clendinning, Ms Leahy and Ms Welch, Ned (the Purple team’s mascot) and going to Dumaresq Dam with Mrs Taylor.

Year 11 Biology explored ecosystem dynamics at the Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre amongst woodland on the banks of the Gara River on Monday, 26 February.
NAPLAN 2024
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN 2024 will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March.
At PLC Armidale, tests will be completed at the following times for Years 7 and 9 in Week 7 and Week 8 of this term:
Wednesday, 13 March – Writing – 42 minutes
Thursday, 14 March - Reading – 65 minutes
Monday, 18 March - Conventions of Language – 45 minutes
Tuesday, 19 March – Numeracy – 65 minutes
The exams will take place in the morning of each of these days.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will undertake activities to help students become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.
The public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration) is available to see the types of questions, tools and functions used in the NAPLAN tests.
Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website (https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k-10/understanding-the-curriculum/naplan/parent-information).
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact either myself or your child’s teacher.

Boarding Life
Sam and Amy Jacometti
Heads of Boarding
Welcome to week 5!
We have packed so much into this first half of the term, with much more still to come. Here’s a quick recap:
Blue Holes Picnic
Last weekend we packed up all of the girls for a picnic at Blue Holes just outside of Armidale. While the rain came and filled the creek the day before, we were fortunate to have the sun shining during the whole picnic. It was a fabulous time of disconnecting from tech while engaging with nature, friends and games.
Boarders Representative Council
Last week also saw our first meeting of the Boarders Representative Council for the year. Each year group has elected two representatives who met over a scrumptious dinner. This first meeting was filled with lively discussion and creative ideas for boarding life, with many events now scheduled in for all to look forward to.
Armidale Show
This coming weekend we are organising a trip to the Armidale Show for any girls in the house who would like to go. Girls will be allowed to attend the show in small groups and periodically check in with staff. If you haven’t yet returned your permission form, please do so as soon as possible.
Reminders
Please reach out to the house mother on shift with any concerns or updates about your daughter. You can contact the boarding house reception on (02) 6770 1716 or the mobile on 0417 697 638.
If you haven’t already, please join our closed instagram page @plcaboarding for regular updates and pictures of boarding life. We welcome your feedback on what you’d like to see more of on this page.
You don't have to be a full or weekly boarder to experience PLC Armidale Boarding Life
CASUAL BOARDING $80 - from 3.30pm to 3.30pm - includes afternoon tea, dinner, breakfast, morning tea and lunch.
This opportunity is regularly taken up by PLC Armidale day students when families are travelling away from Armidale. This enables girls to continue to participate in school and their regular co-curricular commitments during this period of time and enjoy the boarding experience for a short while. The Boarding House welcomes this opportunity, even if only for a short period, as the time is helpful in developing stronger bonds through shared experiences. Those girls who are repeat casual boarders with set days on a regular basis will be given a personal space to decorate and stay in each term, just like weekly and full boarders.
EXTENDED STAY $25 - from 3.30pm to 7.30pm - includes afternoon tea and dinner.
The Extended Day Program allows PLC Armidale students to access a range of learning opportunities after school hours
under the supervision and care of our experienced Boarding and Academic staff. The program also enables our
students to participate in their PLC Armidale extra-curricular program (this does not include attendance at
appointments such as the dentist or doctor). Following their participation in the approved activity, students then
return to the Boarding House and attend dinner with the Boarders. The students will then undertake their
homework during prep time with the boarders.
You can find the Casual Boarding request form HERE and the Extended Stay request form HERE on our Parent Portal. We require 48 hours' notice if possible.

Drama/Art Sydney Excursion
In Week 3, our Year 11 Drama students and Year 12 Visual Art students embarked on an enriching excursion to Sydney, immersing themselves in the city's vibrant theatre scene and exploring its rich artistic offerings.
Drama students were captivated by the OnSTAGE program, which showcased exemplary works from the 2023 HSC Drama cohort, offering valuable insights into the HSC examination requirements and inspiring passion for the craft. The mesmerising dance performances from Callback highlighted the power of physical expression, while interactive workshops with industry professionals allowed students to refine their acting techniques and ensemble skills.
Visual Arts students visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where they explored the ART EXPRESS exhibition, showcasing the exceptional talents of last year's HSC Visual Arts students. Additionally, students were treated to exhibitions featuring the works of European modernist Kandinsky and the emotive art of Louise Bourgeois. At the Museum of Contemporary Art, students encountered significant collections of contemporary Australian art and experienced the works of Tacita Dean, including pieces never before seen in Australia. A visit to Brett Whiteley's Art Studio provided a unique insight into the creative process, immersing students in the atmosphere of an actual studio space.
Belvoir Street Theatre's production of 'Tiny Beautiful Things' and Louis Nowra's 'This Much Is True' at Griffin Theatre provided thought-provoking explorations of human emotions and everyday life in Sydney's Kings Cross. Additionally, a staged reading of contemporary Australian plays offered insights into the rehearsal process and the creative journey behind theatrical productions.
A highlight of the excursion was the visit to the Art of Banksy Exhibition “WITHOUT LIMITS,” offering a museum-quality showcase dedicated to the artistic genius of Banksy. Featuring original art, prints, photos, sculptures, installations, murals, and an infinity room, students were immersed in the creativity and innovation of one of the most iconic contemporary artists.
The Sydney Drama and Art Excursion provided students with a transformative and enriching experience, deepening their understanding and appreciation of both theatre and visual arts. From witnessing exemplary performances and engaging with industry professionals to exploring diverse artistic exhibitions, the excursion ignited students' passion for creativity and provided valuable insights for their artistic journey ahead.
Dance Excursion
Our senior students enjoyed a dance excursion to Tamworth last Saturday to see 'Ascent' by the Sydney Dance Company before the troupe tours Europe. The event was "absolutely exquisite”,

Head Lice Alert
There has been an outbreak of head lice within the College. It is recommended that parents please check all their children at home and treat them if needed.
Signs of lice infestations include finding yellowish or white eggs that are the size of sesame seeds. They are not easily brushed away. Black or brown eggs are dead. There may be a red rash or red bite marks at the back of the neck or behind the ears.
If head lice are found, do not be alarmed, it is easily treated with head lice treatment from the chemist.
Any articles that come in close contact can harbour lice. Examples are clothes, towels and bed linen. All items need to be washed in hot soapy water or head lice soaking solution and then sun dried.
A five-step process can control head lice:
1. Detect: head lice and their eggs
2. Treat: with a head lice treatment
3. Prevent: use a lice comb to remove eggs
4. Repeat: the process after seven days
5. Clean: any articles in close contact.
As head lice are contagious it is suggested that you treat all members of the family at the same time.

Pathways Coordinator
As the students get used to the College routine, we are seeing more and more of their personalities.
Some students became more engaged, animated and active, while some have become more confident in expressing their thoughts.
A lot of the Pathways students have picked up co-curricular activities this year, including tennis lessons, swimming lessons, choir, piano lessons and guitar lessons. This is one of the values PLC Pathways and PLC Armidale hold as we encourage the students to participate in different activities, which not only enhance their life experience but also expose them to the Australian community and daily interactions.
It is our privilege to be part of this moment in their lives as they embark on their adventure, and we look forward to seeing students thrive as they progress through the program.

PLC Armidale Foundation
Can you make a regular financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund?
In 2022, the College made a considered decision to restructure fees for students in Kindergarten to Stage 4 to expand accessibility to a PLC Armidale education.
The provision of scholarships on merit will extend the opportunity for even more young women of character and purpose to receive an outstanding education at PLC Armidale, the region’s pre-eminent school for young women.
The PLCA Foundation Committee is focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, with the intent of raising $130,000 for the school to allocate immediately in the next round of scholarship assessment.
As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructure, we ask that you consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.
Your gift will help the PLC Foundation Committee to offer these scholarships. We require significant and ongoing funding to ensure there is a continual capital base to support the program.
Donations will provide scholarships for the 2025 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible. You can also subscribe to make a small regular automatic donation which will quickly add up over the years.
The generosity of the PLC Armidale community has enabled us to maintain and provide an excellent learning environment for generations of young women.
Giving makes a real difference to every student who attends PLC Armidale now and into the future. We thank you for your continued support as we foster and build a community that stands together.
If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 6770 1700 or email us at enquiries@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au
