From the Principal

MRS NICOLA TAYLOR

PRINCIPAL

PLC Armidale was delighted to host the recent annual briefing led by the Association of Independent Schools (AIS) NSW for Principal’s and Business Managers of Independent Schools across the region. AIS NSW is the key advisory body for Independent Schools, providing a range of services that enable each school to serve the needs of its community.

Across Australia, there are three main education sectors,  Government schools, Catholic Systemic schools and Independent Schools.  The first two sectors operate with a more centralised model of administration, service delivery and regulation compared with Independent Schools where decisions made, staff appointed, students enrolled, policies and practice implemented are the responsibility of the individual school irrespective of size, location or resource base.

Each Independent School is required to operate as a not-for-profit  going concern ‘business’.

My interest in the sector arose from my personal experience of being the daughter of a Government School Principal, yet having the opportunity in my undergraduate studies to choose an elective strand focusing on non-Government schools...

I developed an appreciation of the history of education in Australia, initially the work of the Chaplain and Christian volunteer settlers in the fledgling colony, first in Sydney then in Melbourne. The oldest formal schools in Australia were the work of Churches, with schools founded in 1816, 1820 and 1831 still in operation today. Having worked exclusively with and within Independent Schools, for over 35 years, I have come to appreciate all the more the privilege and responsibility that this Independence affords.

At the recent AIS NSW briefing, we were provided an overview of the actual state and health of the Independent School sector, which is very rarely reported on in the media who appear to delight in making education a political issue based around fees, funding and facilities creating a public versus private divide. The 2022 school data indicates that  37 per cent of students K-12 are being educated in non-government schools (Independent plus Catholic Systemic). This figure rises to 46 per cent of students in Years 11 and 12. Almost half of all NSW enrolment growth since 2012 has been in Independent schools making this the fastest-growing school sector.

Whilst these statistics may not come as much of a surprise, what may be of interest is that 46 per cent of NSW Independent schools have a total student enrolment of fewer than 200 students!! The small school nature of Independent schools is an inherent characteristic confirming that bigger isn’t better…it is just bigger. Forty per cent of NSW Independent schools, of which PLC Armidale is one,  have an enrolment between 200 and 1000 students with just 14 per cent having an enrolment of more than 1000 students.

Sixty-eight per cent of Independent schools are faith-based, with the remaining 32 per cent based on an educational philosophy or community focus. These statistics, in addition to those above, indicate that parents are exercising the right to choose a school for their children where faith, values and purpose are foundational.

State and federal elections are often accompanied by claims that ‘private schools’ are taking funding away from ‘public education’. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whilst government funding is available to both government and non-government schools, the amount per student varies significantly.

Under the current funding model, the parents' capacity to contribute to fees as a direct measure of income (DMI) is used to determine how much funding each Independent school receives. This direct measure of income is not a factor when determining funding to government schools. Please note, as an Independent school, we are not privy to the data about each individual family's financial circumstances. The DMI data is accessed directly from the Australian Taxation Office by the Commonwealth Government on a per family, per Independent school basis.

Independent schools have only received Government funding since the late 1960s, and for most schools, this funding represents 30-40 per cent of income, with the bulk of income coming from private contributions, through the school fees parents pay in post-tax dollars. It is worth noting that the majority of families who have chosen an Independent school for their child are also contributing to the funding of all schools through taxes paid.

These facts, whilst not widely promoted, help to counter the myths that funding non-Government schools means less funding for public schools, that Independent schools are a drain on the taxpayers’ money or that Government funding is used for extravagant building projects.

Suffice to say that if the six Independent schools and the two Catholic systemic schools in Armidale were to suddenly all close, the local Government schools would not be able to accommodate these additional enrolments without significant costs to the public to build, staff and operate more schools without the contribution of parents paying school fees.

Government funding is generally not available to Independent schools to cover capital works costs and expenditure. Building projects and capital programs are funded by each Independent school out of operating surplus or through the private contribution of benefactors.

As the end of the 2022-2023 financial year approaches, I would like to thank the PLC Armidale community past, current and future for their continued support of and contribution to the College, enabling us to continue as the oldest Independent and only All-Girls school in our region serving the needs and choice of our families.

Your contribution to the Annual Giving campaign and subscription donations to the Scholarship fund are greatly appreciated.

Our Foundation Committee will be sending out in the coming weeks more specific detail of how we each can play a part in ensuring that a PLC Armidale education is available to more and more families into the future.

Congratulations to `

All the PLC Armidale students and staff who participated in the Armidale Eisteddfod.

We will have a summary of PLC Armidale results and a photo gallery at the end of term

Our Head Prefect, Chiyo Brown, who performed her Piano Licentiate (LMUSA) exam this week.

The Licentiate Performance Diploma recognises advanced skills, with two diploma examiners expecting the candidate's performance and discussion to be approaching professional levels of musical ability and insight. Chiyo performed a 45-minute program with one work presented from memory.

We were privileged at a recent assembly to have Chiyo perform Rachmaninoff from memory for us, and it was an inspirational way to start the day. In her introduction to the piece, Chiyo described how the process of achieving this was often fraught with tears, but she persevered, and the result speaks for itself.

Chiyo is a recipient of a PLC Armidale Music Scholarship, and this is a wonderful example of grit and grace from a young woman who leads.

Biggest Morning Tea

Our Junior and Senior Schools came together to host a Whole School Biggest Morning Tea event in Week 6.

Student Representative Committee members from Kindergarten to Year 11 sold tasty treats while our Year 12 students ran a cafe from our Hospitality Training Centre serving barista coffee, hot chocolate and tea.

Thank you to all our wonderful parents, students and staff for supporting the cause - together, we raised more than $630 for the Cancer Council.

Term 2 has been a busy term in Junior Music.

PLC Performs, Eisteddfod, Excursions, Rehearsals, and lots of music-making have provided a variety of musical experiences for all Junior students.

The Armidale Eisteddfod has now concluded for our Junior School girls, and what a wonderful experience it was!  Every single child from K-6 participated in at least one event, with quite a few girls participating in more than one ensemble, individual events, speech and drama and NECOM ensembles.

In this issue of the Lion's Roar, we would like to congratulate all our Junior Ensembles, who performed with integrity, grace, determination and, above all, beautiful musicianship.

Congratulations to the following ensembles who had success in their sections this year:

K-2 Choir, highly commended through feedback in a non-competitive section of the Choir Eisteddfod

Treble Makers Vocal Ensemble - 1st place and recipient of the Ex-Services Club Perpetual Shield

Years 3-6 Choir - 3rd Place in unison section. 1st Place in 'two part singing' and Overall Champions and the recipient of the  Paul Lamb Memorial Shield.

Junior String Ensemble - 1st place in 'large ensemble using bowed instruments'.

Silver String Ensemble - 3rd place in 'large ensemble using bowed instruments'.

A big congratulations to all girls who took part in individual music events this year. It is no easy thing to perform your instrument for an audience, and you are all to be commended for your commitment and enthusiasm for music.

There will be a Google form sent home to parents next week asking for individual results to celebrate our participation in the next Lion's Roar, so if you would like your daughters' success recognised in this way, please keep an eye out for the form!

Year 6 Organ Masterclass

On 7th June, Year 6, accompanied by Mrs Dunham and Ms Pracy travelled to St Mary's Cathedral, Armidale, to learn about the organ from internationally renowned organist, Warwick Dunham.

The girls have been learning about the organ as part of a listening unit in their music lessons, and it was wonderful to hear the organ live. The students learnt what all the keyboards and pedals do, plus all the different sounds that are produced when a different stop is pulled.

Mr Dunham played some excellent pieces on the organ, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach.

At the end of the session, each student was able to have a go themselves.

Thank you to Mr Dunham for his knowledge and expertise and for giving us some time to explore the organ.

What a wonderful experience!

Year 5 Music Composition Projects

Year 5 spent most of Term 1 composing their own music for their instrument or xylophones.

They had the choice to write this work in small groups or individually. Every student submitted a composition at the end of the term with a range of instruments from violin, piano, guitar, drums, percussion, voice, flute and xylophones.

What I admired most, is that every composition reflected the students' personalities. They all expressed a part of themselves in their compositions to create music that was unique and highly sophisticated for girls so young.

Three groups even asked to submit their compositions into the Eisteddfod Composition Event!

Each group received amazing feedback from the adjudicator, and two groups (Stella Thomas and Pippa Notley and Sophia Craig, Rose Hopkinson, and Emily Christian) were awarded a 3rd and 2nd placing respectively.

Keep up the wonderful effort Year 5!

Top and above: Year 6 enjoyed their Organ Masterclass with Mr Warwick Dunham

Stage 5 Play Hitler’s Daughter

June 21/22 at the Playhouse

This award-winning play by MonkeyBaa Theatre Company tells the story of Hitler's Daughter through the eyes of four Australian children Mark, Ben, Anna and Tracey. As the friends wait for the school bus in country Australia one rainy morning, Anna begins to tell the tale of Heidi, the daughter of the most hated man in history.

Our Stage 5 class has been working together to create this production. Some have worked on sets and props, while others have created projections and sound effects. Others are directing their peers to stage the play, while others are creating marketing and advertising. This has been a wonderful experience for the student in a play that encourages students to think about diversity, tolerance, moral responsibility, courage, and right from wrong.

Please come and see our play at The Playhouse on either Wednesday, 21 June or Thursday, 22 June at 7:00pm. The play is a one-act play and should be finished by 8pm. Entry by donation - reserve your seat here - please note the content of the play is not suitable for children under 12.

Recently Stage 5 explored the Armidale Playhouse we will be performing  Hitler’s Daughter in.

Special thanks to Mr Stuart Pavel, a much loved previous teacher at PLC Armidale to show us the ropes.

This is a student led project with each student either directing or designing set, designing costume or preparing promotions, even being our lighting and sound technician for the performance. What a fabulous opportunity for our budding future theatre artists.

Congratulations to all our New England Dance Eisteddfod competitors

Don't forget our Chocolate Camp will be held on July 15/16/17 (the last three days of the school holidays).

The camp is a compulsory activity with dates for the camp given at the information evening in Term 1 about our School Musical - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The camp is a vital part of the rehearsal process before we commence the last term of rehearsals.

We’ll see you there!

International and 'Pathways' News

Amy Chiu

Pathways Administrator

As the year progresses, we are getting closer to the time when Pathways students are looking at what they want to do, where they want to go next and how to achieve their goals.

One key element Pathways offers to overseas students is that the program aims to help and support them to reach their dreams.

Often when an international student wants to apply for an Australian school, their English proficiency isn’t strong enough. PLC Pathways provides the opportunity for students to enter the country, with a placement at PLC Armidale, to learn and prepare the students throughout the term, the semester or the year. When the students are ready, they are supported by their family, agents and the Pathways staff, to apply to their desired schools either in Sydney, Melbourne or anywhere else in the country.

With this concept, it might seem that the Pathways program’s student transferring rate is high, but it is actually proof of the success of the program. For students who were not accepted by other schools first, quite often only based on their English level, it is certainly a big accomplishment when they obtain an offer letter from the school after their time in the Pathways program.

Some students were once keen to move to schools in big cities but eventually realised the strong support PLC Armidale can offer and decided to stay. Helen Zhou (2020 Graduate), Sophie Luo (2022 graduate) and our current International students Rosie, Elaine (Year 12), Belle, Zoe (Year 11) and Mary (Year 10) are great ambassadors of the Pathways program who chose to stay and complete their high school years at PLC Armidale.

Thank you to all the teachers and especially the boarding staff who despite knowing that the students might not be staying for long, still spend the time and put full efforts in supporting and teaching them tirelessly. We look forward to working with the current Pathways students in pursuing their dream.

PLC Armidale Foundation

Regular Donations

A big thank you to those who have jumped on board with our regular giving initiative.

PLC Armidale is appealing to members of our community to consider a financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.

This year we introduced regular giving into the school's tax-deductible scholarship fund options.

This fund has significant potential in assisting the school to provide funded scholarships to a recipient from around the state whose life would be changed by the opportunity to access a PLC Armidale education.

Even a small amount donated regularly can quickly add up to an impressive total.

The PLC Armidale Foundation Committee has set a target of $100,000 through regular giving (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) from our parents and staff.

We believe this figure is attainable with the current number of members within our school community.

Donations can be made by clicking here.

Donations will provide scholarships and bursaries from as early as the 2024 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible*, and donations made before the end of the financial year are eligible for deduction immediately.

As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructuring, it is our hope that you can consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.

If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, please contact (02) 6770 1727 or email our enrolments team on enrolments@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au

A gift to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund will open the door for many more exceptional young women to attend PLC Armidale.

You can make a difference by donating today. Thank you, and please give generously!
