2024 FINAL ISSUE
From the Principal
MRS NICOLA TAYLOR
PRINCIPAL
The end-of-year traditions at PLC Armidale involve students attending and engaging in learning experiences right to the end. I was reminded of this in discussion with some families new to the College who commented on the contrast between their daughter’s end-of-school-year experience this year and their previous school experience. The final weeks at PLC Armidale saw girls participate in life-saving activities, with a special thank you to the Year 10 students who, having been trained and selected, worked with the Junior School girls in their learn-to-swim program.
Social Service is appreciated within and outside of our community. Junior School girls delighted residents in local aged care facilities with their visit and musical charm whilst the program in the Senior School took on a new direction.

... This year each grade across the Senior School has focused on a charitable organisation or enterprise to raise awareness and funds in support: Year 7 - Aged Care services; Year 8 Aboriginal Support Agencies; Yr 9 Embrace/Women's Shelter; Yr 10 Allowah Children's Hospital; Yr 11 AGAPE Children's Home; and Yr 12 Anya's Wish. These will continue to be target charities for the respective grades in future years, allowing us to strengthen our connection over time.
Guild Drama, a signature PLC Armidale event, continues to delight and showcase learning, leadership, collaboration and teamwork, all integral to the PLC Armidale experience. The 47th Guild Drama did not disappoint, with a record number of Old Girls in attendance, including a panel of Old Girls - Anneliese O’Sullivan (2011), Melissa Harvey (2013) and Chelsea Jeffery (2013) as judges and clear marking criteria including a number of pre and post-performance elements (such as cleaning up the Guild Rooms) - Dixon was awarded the 2024 Guild Drama Shield!
Along with these events, our Carols in the Cathedral (St Peter’s Anglican) was a delight, it was encouraging to see many new as well as many familiar faces join with staff and students to mark the significance and purpose of the Christmas account.
We were delighted to host The Reverend Lyle Sims, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of NSW at both our Carols Service and Speech Day , as well as Mrs Leah Russell, Chairwoman of College Council and Dr Paul Burgis, Principal of PLC Sydney. Each spoke positively of these events and were encouraged by the quality, quantity and diversity of accomplishments evident.
We were honoured to have Ms Alice Rickards (Class of 1998) perform and present aspects of her professional journey inspired whilst a student of the College to pursue her studies in music. Alice completed undergraduate and then post-graduate studies at the Queensland Conservatorium and the Royal Academy of London, respectively. Alice was appointed to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Australian Haydn Ensemble working professionally as a violinist. With the advice of her father Dr Arther Rickards, ringing in her ears -”once you excel in your profession, you can use that platform to influence or contribute to other causes you’re passionate about” and the influence of her regional roots, Alice spoke of being inspired to weave together her desire to raise awareness of environmental issues through music- expressed by the Sequoia Duo which she founded, the ensemble having won a number of awards for their work.
It has been a strong end to a year of encouragement to explore, serve, journey. In addition to the events mentioned above, the 2024 Sports Dinner attended by more than 150 people was another highlight. Nicola Olyslagers, our guest speaker, was inspirational in her advice to the girls to see the winners podium as a shared space . As well, to pursue interests, including sport with a clear sense of meaning and purpose beyond just winning.
It was a fitting recognition that PLC Armidale was also named as the highest NAPLAN performing school in the region. Fitting because of our high participation rate, 98 per cent, but also because all students are given the opportunity to take part and are not coached for the tests. Rather, the results reflect the culture of learning and focus on literacy and numeracy in all grades, not just the NAPLAN ones (3, 5, 7, 9).
Academic Endeavour, Creative & Performing Arts, Leadership & Service, Sport & Outdoor Education - the four pillars of the PLC Armidale experience - clearly evident throughout the year but on display in a special way as the 2024 Academic Year concludes.
Wishing every member of the PLC Armidale College Community a very blessed Christmas and New Year season.
“For to us a son is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Congratulations
Throughout the year, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the various interests and accomplishments of PLC Armidale girls. We will be aware of the experiences girls undertake to represent the College. We may not know about experiences and achievements in areas of interest outside of school. Please let our Communications and Marketing Manager, Mrs Arundale know. Mrs Arundale greatly enjoys telling the story of the quality and achievements of our PLC Armidale girls.

What a fabulous finish to our 2024 school year. Our annual Guild Drama is an extravaganza of our girls' talent. Led by our four Guild Captains, each performance is written, choreographed, costumed, staged, and performed entirely by our students from Kindergarten through to Year 11. After only six afternoons of rehearsals, the results astound us every year. To finish the day, a surprise teacher dance delighted everyone!

HEADS OF BOARDING
A Festive Season of Fun in the Boarding House
The boarding house has been bustling with holiday cheer and creative energy this December. Our annual Best Dressed Christmas event saw impressive participation, with Venus taking home the overall winner's title and Isla earning a special mention for her dedicated effort.
The dorm door decorating competition reached new heights this year, with increased collaboration among students. Year 9 boarders claimed the championship with their winning door design, which cleverly wove humor and creativity into an engaging narrative.
A highlight of the season was our celebration for Ms Brazier's upcoming arrival, complete with games, festive decorations, and delicious cupcakes. The girls also unleashed their inner performers at our Pop Star themed dinner night, dressing up and enjoying an entertaining evening of karaoke.
None of these wonderful events would have been possible without the exceptional leadership of our Boarding Prefect, Poppy, who has shown outstanding dedication in coordinating activities that bring our boarding community together.
We wish all our boarding families a safe and happy break and look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2025, with our Welcome BBQ scheduled for Tuesday, January 28 at 5pm. The boarding house will open from 2pm that day for student arrivals. The first official day of school will be Wednesday, January 29, beginning with our commencement assembly at 9am.

On Tuesday, 26 November, we enjoyed a delightful evening of music and drama at our annual String Soirée.

String Soirée has long been a cherished event on the PLC Armidale calendar, and this year’s blend of music and drama made it even more special.

The semi-formal event included an awards presentation celebrating PLC Armidale student sporting achievements for 2024 and a charity auction supporting PLC Armidale representative athletes.
