Term 4 | Week 1 | 2023
From the Principal
MRS NICOLA TAYLOR
PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the final term for the 2023 Academic year.
It doesn’t quite feel real that another Year 12 have completed the HSC program, celebrated their valedictory week and commenced the HSC examinations demonstrating both grit and grace throughout.
It was encouraging to welcome eleven girls who commenced at PLC Armidale this week, joining year groups across both the Junior and Senior School.
It was a privilege to accompany ten of our Year 10 and Year 11 students who selflessly gave of their time, energy and talent over the break taking part in the PLC Armidale service learning trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Under the very capable leadership of our Chaplain/Head of Boarding, Ms Jennifer Leahy these girls also demonstrated grit and good grace as they sought to serve and encourage those at both the McKean Leprosy Mission/ Aged Care facility and AGAPE, an orphanage caring for babies through to young people with, or at risk of developing HIV Aids.
Great lessons were learned throughout the trip, including local Thai phrases and customs, the encouragement thankless tasks such as cleaning and painting brings to others, and perhaps most importantly, the value of service and the meaning of unconditional love.

Last term, Jennifer Leahy confirmed with me her intention to step down from the Head of Boarding component of her role, returning to the position of College Chaplain. Under Jennifer's lead, the sense of community and belonging in the Boarding House has been strengthened. A focus on the academic support and engagement of Boarders has been a priority, and the pastoral care support of the Boarders and Staff evident. I am thankful to Jennifer for her service to the College and look forward to her ongoing input into the life of the Boarding House through her role as Chaplain.
I am delighted to announce that Mr Sam and Mrs Amy Jacometti have been appointed as the Joint Heads of Boarding for an initial period from Term 4, Week 4 when Jennifer takes up the Year 9 ESJ (Explore Serve Journey) Program. Sam and Amy are well known within the PLC Armidale community, Sam in his role as a member of the Academic Staff, Amy in her role as a member of the P&F Executive and Parent Liaison role. What may be less known, but relevant to the Boarding House role is that Sam and Amy both have qualifications in Youth Work with previous experience in the residential care of young people.
In his time at PLC Armidale, Sam has demonstrated his interest and strengths in pastoral care along with his leadership capacity as the Acting Head of Music. Amy is an accredited Mental Health Social Worker who will bring her skill and experience to bear in support and care of the girls in the Boarding House. The Jacometti's are keen to embrace the role as a family with their young daughters, Lucinda and Annaliese also to have a presence within the Boarder House community.
Mr Zac Clarke will be leaving us in early November to take up a role in IT with an Armidale Business Group. Zac came to us as part of a year long IT traineeship program which we were able to extend for a further year. We have valued Zac’s contribution to the College and wish him well in his future endeavours.
This term we welcome Mr Aaron Creamer who has taken up the position of Design Technology & Food Technology teacher in the Senior School. We are delighted to welcome the Creamer family to PLC Armidale.
A feature of the Term Four Commencement Service each year is the opportunity to induct our Senior Student Leadership team, Prefects, Captains and Deputies, who will take the lead throughout Term 4 and Terms 1-3, 2024. Each applicant for these positions prepared a manifesto, delivered a speech, were interviewed by members of the Executive and made themselves vulnerable in the process.
Throughout the application process, in manifestos, interviews and speeches, many of spoke of the College values, not as labels or wall art, but as actions that demonstrate each value at work. In any organisation or community core values create the common ground or minimum expectations of all who are part of that community. In our context, it is students, staff and families who have chosen PLC Armidale.
In 2017, the PLCA community acknowledged four core values: Humility, Integrity, Respect and Self-Discipline. Why these values? They reflect core principles of Christian faith, they focus our eyes on others - not on ourselves, they consider what is in the best interest of all, rather than the personal preference of a few, they run counter to a culture which says 'if it feels good do it', which demands instant gratification and entitlement to a life of ease.
Although these core values have been incorporated into the more recent history of the College, they have featured in the DNA of PLCA for much longer. At our Commencement Service, I shared some of the historic record of the last private owner of the school, Miss Althea Tendall.
Miss Tendall was an academic with a background in English Literature and the study of languages. She had come to Australia and was vice Principal at a girls school in Victoria prior to purchasing a school in Armidale in 1909. The school consisted of one staff member, 13 students, a name (the Armidale Girls' High School) and goodwill. With much grit and good grace, Althea set about building community. She introduced a revised logo, incorporated the motto "Ad Astra", changed the name finally settling on the Hilton School, tightened up the uniform, set high standards for student behaviour, and high standards for teaching and learning.
Althea Tendall believed in hard intellectual labour and thoroughness of work. She was of the view that women could best contribute to the wider world through self-sufficiency, not subservience, a combination of self-discipline and sharing. Teachers were set the challenge of having a class work together rather than each to their own advantage. Humility, integrity, respect & self-discipline in practice - the common ground strengthening the common good.

Jump Rope For Heart
Jump Rope for Heart success in the Junior School
Skipping has become a favourite activity in the Junior School since the beginning of Term 3.
Jump Rope for Heart is the Heart Foundation’s primary school skipping challenge that helps kids move more, have fun and raise funds for lifesaving research and programs.
The students were outstanding in their participation and skill development. It has been great to see students who have never skipped before starting to skip with confidence. We are seeing lots of criss-cross, backwards skipping, pretzels, partner skipping and some very interesting choreographed routines from our Stage 3 students.
The most exciting news of all is the amount of money raised for the Heart Foundation. The
students exceeded our target and raised $1923 in total.
On behalf of the college and the Heart Foundation, I thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program this year!

SCAM alert
We have received notification from the Commonwealth Bank of a scam involving parents of schools banking with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and like financial institutions.
PLC Armidale’s protocol for any discussion about fees and fee payment is as follows:
Only the following staff from the College would contact families directly for fee payment and financial matters - Nonni Bunn (Accounts Manager), Rita Brissett (Group Accountant)
The fee schedule published annually specifies the school tuition fees payable.
The Finance team would not offer a substantial discount if fees were paid immediately. We would never ask for invoice details or credit card details over the phone to make such a payment. The College does not use BPoint for fee payments.
In the event of any fee overpayment, Nonni Bunn would contact the family by phone and follow up in email from a PLC Armidale email address to confirm.

PLC Armidale Foundation
Can you make a regular financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund?
In 2022, the College made a considered decision to restructure fees for students in Kindergarten to Stage 4 to expand accessibility to a PLC Armidale education.
The provision of scholarships on merit will extend the opportunity for even more young women of character and purpose to receive an outstanding education at PLC Armidale, the region’s pre-eminent school for young women.
The PLCA Foundation Committee is focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, with the intent of raising $130,000 for the school to allocate immediately in the next round of scholarship assessment.
As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructure, we ask that you consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.
Your gift will help the PLC Foundation Committee to offer these scholarships. We require significant and ongoing funding to ensure there is a continual capital base to support the program.
Donations will provide scholarships from as early as the 2024 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible. You can also subscribe to make a small regular automatic donation which will quickly add up over the years.
The generosity of the PLC Armidale community has enabled us to maintain and provide an excellent learning environment for generations of young women.
Giving makes a real difference to every student who attends PLC Armidale now and into the future. We thank you for your continued support as we foster and build a community that stands together.
If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 6770 1700 or email us at enquiries@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au
A gift to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund will open the door for many more exceptional young women to attend PLC Armidale and be equipped to lead a life of significance.

Armidale – E-Scooter Trial Safety
Trial rules and tips for e-scooter riders
You can only use e-scooters hired through Council’s chosen provider Beam on selected roads, shared paths, and bike paths in the trial area. Privately owned e-scooters are not allowed on NSW roads or road related areas (including in trial areas).
The minimum age for use is 16 years old.
Shared e-scooters can only be ridden on designated shared paths and roads. It is illegal to ride e-scooters on footpaths.
Only one person is allowed to ride a shared e-scooter at any one time.
You are limited to riding at 10km/h on shared paths and 20km/h on the road.
On the designated shared paths, you must:
give way to pedestrians
keep left.
You must wear an approved bicycle helmet at all times when riding an e-scooter.
You must use the e-scooter lights when riding in darkness or hazardous weather conditions.
E-scooter riders are also subject to the same drug driving offences as motor vehicle drivers. You cannot have illicit drugs present in your system or ride while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
If you are caught drink or drug riding, serious penalties apply and you may face consequences for your driver’s licence. Find out more on e-scooter offences that may apply.
You do not need a driver’s licence to ride an e-scooter.
Always wear brightly coloured clothing so other road users can see you easily.
Please ride predictably and indicate clearly, so other people are aware of your intentions.
