Celebrating Science Week: Empowering Girls in STEM
This week marks National Science Week. It is good to have a point of focus on such an important area of study given the incredible impact that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have on our world.
However, it is better to have almost a daily focus on these subjects as girls across the College from Pre K to Year 12 have the opportunity to engage in teaching and learning activities which stimulate curiosity, creativity and wonder which are at the heart of success in STEM.
Research has consistently shown a significant gender gap in STEM fields. Globally, girls are less likely to select STEM subjects at school and are underrepresented in STEM-related careers. In Australia, only 15 per cent of “STEM - qualified jobs are held by women” (Department of Industry, Science and Resources, 2023). Social stereotypes, a lack of female role models, and community expectations have all contributed to this disparity.
In an all-girls school like ours, these trends are being defied every day. The culture of learning at PLC Armidale encourages students to explore their interests in STEM without the constraints often found in co-educational settings. Here's why our girls are uniquely positioned to excel in STEM...
... A Culture of Encouragement: In our school, every girl is encouraged to pursue her interests and passion, whether they lie in the sciences, humanities, or creative arts. This encouragement starts from the earliest years and continues through to Year 12. By fostering a culture where curiosity and inquiry are celebrated, we help our girls see STEM as a field where they can thrive.
Role Models and Mentors: Our school actively promotes female role models in STEM, both from within our community and the broader world. These role models serve as powerful examples of what is possible. Our girls have the chance to learn from and be inspired by women who have broken barriers and made significant contributions to STEM.
Eight of our STEM Faculty are women, four teachers with a background in science, three teachers in mathematics and a highly experienced science laboratory technician. Even our Head of Junior School has a science degree!
Tailored Learning Experiences: We recognize that girls often learn best in collaborative and supportive environments. Our STEM learning programs are designed with this in mind, commencing with hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences in the Junior School which allow students to explore complex concepts at their own pace. This approach not only enhances understanding but also builds confidence in their abilities, leading to selection of courses such as Investigating Science and Extension Science in Stage 6.
Opportunities to Shine: From participation in national science competitions, representation at the annual National Youth Science Forum, engaging in coding, robotics and 3D printing, not to mention the award winning Junior School Global Garden, our students have numerous opportunities to apply their STEM knowledge in real-world contexts. These experiences help spark personal interest across a diverse range of STEM fields.
As we commemorate National Science Week, we are proud of the achievements of both our current students but also that of our Alumnae, many of whom have pursued careers in STEM. PLC Armidale girls don’t just endure STEM, they enjoy it. They are leading the way defying global trends, proving that when given the right environment, enthusiastic role models, and opportunities to learn both in and outside of the classroom, girls can excel in STEM.
Congratulations
Throughout the year, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the various interests and accomplishments of PLC Armidale girls. We will be aware of the experiences girls undertake to represent the College. We may not know about experiences and achievements in areas of interest outside of school. Please let our Communications and Marketing Manager, Mrs Arundale know. Mrs Arundale greatly enjoys telling the story of the quality and achievements of our PLC Armidale girls.
Congratulations to ...
... our IGSA representative hockey and netball teams
who displayed great teamwork, sportswomenship and determination as they took to the field and courts last weekend in Sydney. Whilst the wins were impressive, even more so was the way in which each game was played with focused determination. Thank you to our Head of Sport Mrs Lucy Donaldson, along with Sport Coordinator Mr Greg Cotterell and the various coaches who accompanied the girls on this trip.
Sophia Craig, April Ferguson, Shiloni Katta and Edie Clynch
who will all perform as part of Opera Australia's regional tour production of La Boheme this Thursday in Armidale's Lazenby Hall. Our girls make up nearly 25 per cent of the show's children's choir and we are so proud of them. There are still a few tickets left via Trybooking.
Save the Date - PLC Armidale Signature Art Prize
Our inaugural acquisitive art prize has been launched.
With a prize pool of $10,000, we invite all professional artists to enter.
Works will be judged by industry leaders: the renowned artist Angus Nivison, the renowned curator and exhibition manager Belinda Hungerford, and the renowned gallerist Allison Bellinger.

We will release tickets soon for this fabulous evening.
Please share this news with all your creative friends and encourage them to enter via this link by August 30.
This week Dr Justin Coulson joined us for our Community Forum 2024.
In the afternoon, he spoke to our Year 9- 11 girls and asked them to consider their feelings about being “enough”, then suggested specific strategies they can practice to move towards a positive sense of self so that they can do more than survive adolescence - they can thrive.
In the evening Dr Coulson spoke with parents and educators from across the region about 'Miss Connection' - why your daughter 'hates' you, expects the world and needs to talk.
This significant event, was attended by parents, educators and those working with pre-teen girls through to young women from across the New England, North West Region in person and via livestream.
Open to all community members regardless of where their daughters go to school the evening was one of a series focusing on factors that impact the growth and development of young women in an increasingly technological, disconnected, digital and highly sexualised world.
Dr Coulson gave insight into the complex adolescent world of our tween and teenage daughters and discussed issues such as mental health concerns, body image issues, premature and/or non-consensual intimacy, friendship challenges, alcohol, drugs and social media.
Feedback from both the students and adults was fantastic with Justin's warm and engaging style coupled with his knowledge and vast research examples proving a winning combination.
"A brief thank you for a brilliant parent seminar from Justin Coulson. We joined via zoom and were thoroughly impressed with his research and advice, but also his life experiences as a ‘real dad’ to his six girls. It was fantastic. Thank you!"
"Excellent presentation. Thank you! My husband watched till the very end and enjoyed it too!"
"Thank you so much, very informative."
"Excellent - thank you!!"
Help us explore the impact of all-girl education
This year, the Girls' Schools' Association United Kingdom “GSA UK” is undertaking the largest commissioned study into Girls’ Schools across the United Kingdom and Australia to understand the benefits of same-sex schools for girls.
PLC Armidale is a member of the International Coalition of Girls Schools (ICGS) and Independent Girls School Association (igsa) and through our connection with them, we have been invited to participate in the survey also.
ICGS has experienced exponential growth in recent years, now numbering more than 550 girls’ schools of every type, in every sector, across 24 countries. The size and growth of this network make all-girls schools formidable allies in advancing equity and equality.
The all-girls’ school sisterhood is thriving!
This 10-minute survey will ask about your experience of same-sex schools and their benefits. It also allows you to share your views on how same-sex schools could better support students in making better-informed choices about their future.
All responses will remain anonymous and will be used to better understand how to support students and families in our schools.
The survey will close on 30th August 2024.
Debating: Archdale and Tri Schools
The debating season at PLC Armidale has seen incredible growth and development in individuals and teams. It's fantastic to see PLC Armidale rebuilding the debating program.
In Week 2, PLC Armidale had debates against NEGS, TAS, Pymble Ladies' College, Abbotsleigh and PLC Sydney. Some stand out performances included wins against NEGS (Year 7 and 8) and Abbotsleigh (Year 10). This week our opponents were Abbotsleigh (Year 8), Monte (Intermediate Division) and MLC (Senior Division), with a Junior School debate against NEGS scheduled for next week.

STEM Stars: Science Extension Mentoring Program
Nevada Guiance, Huna Moghaddar and Amelie van der Werf are all part of our science mentoring program. with the University of Sydney. We asked them to tell us more.....
Nevada in the USYD Chemistry Lab.
Nevada Guiance Project Name: A Novel Approach to Ascorbate Sensing Using a Coumarin-Based Fluorescent Probe.
Ascorbate is an important reducing agent and antioxidant, and investigating the mechanism of a sensor for ascorbate is something relevant and intriguing in the field of fluorescent sensing.
My mentor's name is Professor Elizabeth New from USYD. She has won the Prime Minister's Prize for Science and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and previously acted as interim head of the School of Chemistry at USYD. She is currently undertaking research in Jordan.
I have known my mentor since 2021 and worked on a few projects with her about fluorescent sensing, a highly applicable and emerging field in chemistry that has countless applications.
Science Extension has been a wonderful course to allow in-depth research in a field of interest, and the development of a research report has been really enjoyable.
I would recommend Science Extension to anyone who is interested in deeper research of a particular area of science that fascinates them. It's a wonderful experience and there is a lot to learn about statistics, hypothesis testing and the scientific research process.
A screenshot of some of the protein analysis Huna has been doing.
Huna Moghaddar has Callum Rosser and Joanna New as her mentors for her Science Extension research project for this year.
Callum is a research student at the University of Sydney who is developing new diagnostic agents for cancers as an organic chemist, and Joanna is also based in the University of Sydney and is a structural biologist; she looks at analysing and testing human proteins responsible for neurodegenerative diseases (a disease type where the central nervous system cells don't function properly).
I signed up for this program when I started the Science Extension HSC course in November 2023 and the program has involved a lot of emails back and forth, as well as zoom meetings to catch up and structure the main purposes of my project.
There have also been extra support sessions available which have been quite useful in understanding other components of the course, such as statistical analysis. I have gained so much knowledge and expertise from the program in terms of scientific research, data analysis methods, scientific report-writing (ie. communicating something fairly complicated in understandable terms) as well as specifics about my project looking at bacteria and how treatments can be developed for them in the future (due to the significant issue surrounding resistance of bacteria to common antibiotics).
Overall, I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is up for taking on a project which will really accelerate your know-how in terms of the sciences in general. Anyone who has a deep enough passion for the sciences can take on this course, since as well as being able to take on a passion project in the form of scientific research, lots of scientific analysis skills are learnt along the way which will definitely assist in those looking to pursue STEM at a tertiary level (whether it involves research or not!).
It has also taught me the importance of time management since being in year 12 means the project has to be balanced alongside studying for the HSC, and this in itself may cause a lot of students to be skeptical of taking on the course, however, I have found that having something really interesting that is something different than studying HSC content has really freshened things up in terms of what I have been doing this year.
Lest We Forget: An emotional history extension excursion
Late last term two year 12 History Extension students, Eileen Wickstead and Emily Wood travelled with Mrs Roxanne Shumack to Myall Creek to the site established to commemorate the infamous massacre of 28 innocent Aboriginal women and children in 1838.
The site has been established as a place for reconciliation between descendents of victims and descendents of perpetrators.
This massacre remains the only time when white murderers faced the penalty for their vicious crimes and seven of them were executed, but at least another four remained as outlaws.
The students incorporated this excursion into their case study on the Australian Frontier, providing a valuable personal experience and insight into the violence that happened all over Australia during colonisation.
Year 12 Celebration Formal
The formal committee has been busily organising the Year 12 formal to be held from 4pm on 24 August 2024 at Petersons Winery.
Final numbers were required for catering by yesterday and the booking engine will close tonight.

PLC Armidale Representative Hockey and Netball Teams Report
Last Thursday, 48 talented athletes traveled to Sydney to compete in the 2024 IGSA hockey and netball competition.
After arriving late Thursday night, we woke to a hot buffet breakfast, during which some of the girls did not hold back from eating a number of muffins. After a filling breakfast, the netball and hockey girls separated to have a training session at Olympic Park.
The netball girls were privileged to have Grace Whyte as their special guest coach. She plays for the NSW SWIFTS and the Australian U19 team, to name a few of her accomplishments. After a vigorous training session for both teams, we had a quick lunch stop and then returned to the bus for our first round of games. Friday night, Netball saw the Juniors with a convincing win against Abbotsleigh 23-6. And the seniors won against Tara 18-16. The junior hockey girls won their game against Queenwood 3-0.
And the senior hockey girls also won their first game against Roseville 4-0 In their second game, the senior team came short in a toughly contested game against Monte 2-0.
At the conclusion of the games, everyone went back to the accommodation for a pizza and pasta night and went to bed early for our games the following day.
An early morning signalled the start of Day Two, as both sports started at 8 am. The netball girls won games against Ravenswood (18-15) and Ascham (31-18). The junior girls also had a great day, winning their games against Ravenswood 32-10 and Ascham 21-6, making both netball teams undefeated for the first IGSA trip. The hockey girls also had a successful day.
After a tough final game, the seniors won both their games against St Catherine’s 2-0 and Loretto Kirribilli 2-1. The juniors won their first game 2-0 against Loretto Kirribilli and fought hard to draw the second 0-0 against Abbotsleigh.
Congratulations to all the athletes who competed and represented PLC brilliantly. Our sportsmanship and grace on the court and field were so great to be part of. We would like to thank the coaches and staff who went on the trip; this would have been impossible without your assistance and organisation.
Another big thank you to the parents who travelled down to support us. It did not go unnoticed. We would also like to thank Mrs Taylor for traveling down and her never-ending sideline support. Once again, congratulations all! Ad Astra!!!!!!!!

Meet our Hockey Captains
Hockey Vice -Captain Ellie Woods and Hockey Captain Ellen Marsden
Hockey Captain Ellen Marsden
1. What is it about hockey that makes it a great sport?
Hockey is a great sport because it is a positive game to play as it has an engaging environment both on fields and off the field. You develop a good connection with all players and develop your cardiovascular system.
2. What other sport do you like to play/watch?
I love to play different sports, such as netball, soccer, and hockey. This is because I grew up in a family that is really active, and when I was younger, I was always watching a family member play sports. I love watching any sport, but I really enjoy watching the NRL with the family on a Friday night while I’m home.
3. In your opinion, what makes a good captain/sport leader?
My opinion on what makes a good captain/sports leader is someone who has many different qualities and helps motivate the team they are a part of. The captain needs to lead by example and commitment, make sure everyone feels included and valued, and have sportsmanship while also communicating with their teammates and coaches who are involved in the sport. I also feel like the captain of the team needs to be passionate about the sport during training and throughout the game and also someone that younger people look up to.
Hockey Vice-Captain Ellie Woods
1. What is it about hockey that makes it a great sport?
Hockey is a great sport because of the people you play it with and the friends that you can make through the sport. It is a very community sport and also allows for you to have amazing opportunities. It is not only a great way to maintain fitness but it is a great way to be involved in the community.
2. What other sport do you like to play/watch?
Another sport that I like to play and watch is indoor hockey. This is very similar to field hockey but more fast-paced and also very fun. It is a great game to watch and also very fun to play. It is a great way to make friends, stay fit, and stay playing hockey when it's the off-season.
3. In your opinion, what makes a good captain/sport leader?
In my opinion, what makes a good captain is someone who is fair and good at working in a team. They need to work well with others, be friendly, be a role model to other players, and have good leadership skills. These are important qualities to have because younger girls and others will look up to you, so it is important that a friendly environment is created.
Indigenous Round of Sport
This week, our school launched its inaugural Sport Indigenous Round. Students received special ribbons designed by Ellen Marsden (current Year 12), featuring artwork representing connection and cultural awareness. These eco-friendly ribbons were worn throughout week 3 in place of regular school ribbons during all school activities and sporting events. This initiative, developed by our student representatives, aims to celebrate Australia's Indigenous culture within our school community through sport, promoting inclusivity and respect.
