Lion's Roar Newsletter
Term 1 | Week 11 2024
From the Principal
MRS NICOLA TAYLOR
PRINCIPAL
As Term One draws to a close, my theme for 2024, 'Explore, Serve, Journey,' has been evident as both staff and students have been encouraged to explore new learnings and ways of doing things, to give of themselves, not for personal gain but to strengthen the communities they are part of, and to embrace the disruption and challenge of change and growth.
A very tangible expression of Exploring, Serving and Journeying was seen as Years 3 to 11 took part in their annual camps this week.
Year 10 embarked a week earlier on the Stage 5 Signature Explore Serve Journey (ESJ) experience, journeying from the highest city in Australia to the peak of the highest mountain in Australia, exploring Sydney and Canberra along the way.
An opportunity for social service in Sydney at the 'Kids Giving Back' program in Paddington saw our girls cheerfully make a nutritious dinner and fruit snacks to be served to some 100 homeless people the charity provides for that evening,
Leadership through Challenge, along with Sport & Outdoor Education, are two of the four pillars of the PLC Armidale Experience we seek to provide each girl with, Academic Rigour & Endeavour and Creative & Performing Arts, the remaining two.
School camps provide learning opportunities not easily replicated in the course of the usual school program...

This year our girls journeyed by train or coach, some near, others quite far to reach their various destinations. Being away from home, eating different food, or food prepared in different ways, sharing a bedroom and bathroom with a lot more people than at home, are learning experiences of their own. Following a timetable of ‘lessons’ outside the classroom, exercises focus, self-discipline, open-mindedness, resilience, determination and grit.
Living in community, even with one's friends, tests the social fabric . Many girls, including our younger ones, have become dependent upon technology to facilitate communication with their peers. Online interactions are, for many, the least helpful way of learning how to form friendships and maintain healthy relationships. The ‘screen’ or shield the device provides often leads girls to say and react in ways they rarely would in real-time, real-place social connections. Our camps provided a time for ‘digital detox’, apart from some concessions when travelling or when individual circumstances warranted the use of a phone. This has highlighted how dependent some of our girls have become on their phones to provide a sense of social confidence and to occupy their time. The sense of self and security in engagement with others is a greater challenge than physical activities.
I want to pay tribute to and thank the teaching and support staff for their careful planning, preparation and willingness to attend, which have made the camps this week an overall success. Taking groups of students away from the routine of the school day and setting is no small thing. With camps held in a variety of locations, including Lake Keepit near Tamworth, Lake Ainsworth near Lennox Head, Emerald Beach near Coffs Harbour and Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains - the journey alone could be daunting for some staff to have to supervise.
Providing care, supervision, social coaching and support to girls anxious about new learnings are some of the ways the staff have sought to serve the girls they are with. This has been done willingly with a sense of purpose in the worthwhileness of these experiences.
Thank you also to our families for the trust you place in the College and your support of our Outdoor Education (camps) program and initiatives such as ESJ, which has proved to be such a beneficial experience for our Stage Five students.
Meanwhile, back at school our youngest and oldest students have enjoyed having the campus to themselves, with our Year 12 students journeying through the ‘non-assessable’ mid-course examinations as they focus on their academic studies in this important HSC year.
I trust that you enjoy hearing all of the stories of camp week when your daughters return and would encourage you to speak with your daughter about how she felt without access to her phone and set goals with her to continue the ‘digital detox’ in some way throughout the holiday break.
Congratulations
Throughout the year, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the various interests and accomplishments of PLC Armidale girls. We will be aware of the experiences girls undertake to represent the College. We may not know about experiences and achievements in areas of interest outside of school. Please let our Communications and Marketing Manager, Mrs Arundale know. Mrs Arundale greatly enjoys telling the story of the quality and achievements of our PLC Armidale girls.
Students and staff enjoyed a wide range of activities in stunning locations around NSW during PLCA Camp Week 2024
Lake Ainsworth - Years 7 and 8 and Years 3-6
Lake Ainsworth is a stunning location for a camp. Students enjoyed activities like stand-up paddle boarding, sailing and canoeing, rock climbing, raft building and archery, as well as a fabulous marine educational experience with lots of amazing marine life.
Lake Keepit - Year 9
Lake Keepit welcomed the students with a gloriously muddy 'Mud Run' to start their camp experience on Monday. The weather at Lake Keepit was outstanding, and students and staff had a fantastic time out on the water, learning how to sail and developing their stand-up paddle-boarding skills.
Thredbo - Year 10 ESJ
The arrival of the first snow of the season brought much joy and excitement to our intrepid ESJ team in Thredbo. A slight change in schedule had the group hiking up mountains in the snow and mountain biking in chilly conditions.
Emerald Beach - Year 11
Our senior girls settled in well to Emerald Beach with a surfing lesson, a high ropes course in the Coffs hinterland and a Master Chef challenge. Our School Psychologist, Penny Kempton, also delivered some workshops to the girls on study skills, note-taking skills, and managing stress and procrastination to support them in their continuing HSC journey.
Midcourse Exams - Year 12
Year 12 have been diligently studying and completing their Midcourse Exams here at school. It was lovely and quiet around the grounds for the exams, and Year 12 are to be commended on their diligence and application during this exam period.
All of the camps went well, and we are sure your daughters will have many exciting stories to share with you during the holidays!

Egg Dying in Year 7 and 8 German for Easter
For Easter, a group of girls from Stage 4 German opted to join an egg-dying/painting competition.
This is a popular German Easter tradition. The girls could choose to either blow out and paint their eggs, or boil them in dye and then participate in an egg-cracking competition (when two eggs are bumped together, the one that doesn't break is the winner).
A range of beautiful eggs showed up in class, so it was hard to choose winners. Girls also told stories of how they and their families had participated in the egg decorating at home over Easter.
Thanks so much to all who participated! Frohe Ostern!

For more than two decades, our Livestock Team has been one of the most rewarding features of our College, and this year we would like to celebrate what has become one of the most successful and respected agricultural teams in the region. Join us to watch a parade, learn more about our team's plans for the future, and enjoy a presentation and dinner with our guest speaker (and alumna) Dr Amy Tait. BOOK HERE
A SPEAKER NOT TO BE MISSED Saturday, 4 May
Dr Amy Tait has travelled an adventurous career path around the world since graduating from PLC Armidale in 1995, and it has always involved livestock welfare observation in some shape or form.
For the last five years, she has been leading a project at the University of New England focusing on various welfare aspects of the live export market. At our inaugural Livestock Team Celebration dinner she will give us some insight into her work and explain how science helps us to remain impartial and be guided by research results rather than led by emotion, particularly when working in contentious areas - something everyone working in the livestock industry can relate to.
Dr Tait's extensive knowledge and engaging, down-to-earth manner will bring this hot topic to life.
"How we provide the best care for our livestock and how they interact with their environment are research and teaching areas which inspire me to dive deep to find answers.
This drive to understand animals, especially cattle and sheep, has directed me towards working on many livestock properties across Australia and also in the United States all while gaining a tertiary education through The University of Queensland, including a Certificate in Animal Husbandry, Associate Diploma in Animal Production, Bachelor of Applied Science (Animal Studies) with first-class honours and last but not least, my PhD.
Over the last decade I have been more involved with research specifically looking at animal welfare in intensive housing systems. My PhD investigated ways to alleviate heat stress in intensively housed cattle and I am now continuing in this area of research focusing on various welfare aspects of sheep and cattle that are exported live.
I have recently been appointed as a Lecturer in Animal Science at UNE, where I teach animal physiology, feedlot management, animal handling, and reproduction."

NEWS FLASH: PLC Armidale will host the Regional Shakespeare Carnival on campus on Wednesday, May 15.
We will welcome 60 children from schools across the New England Northwest and North Coast to perform in our Dorothy Knox and Astra Arts Centres.
Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2024 School’s Shakespeare Carnival. It was our biggest Carnival yet, and I am delighted that so many students were willing to work collaboratively to create an item for the Carnival. You should be very proud of yourselves! Unfortunately, I can only take one item from each category on to the Regional Carnival ( I wish I could take all of you!). So, without further ado, congratulations to the following students who will be representing PLC Armidale at the 2024 Regional Shakespeare Carnival.
PLC Armidale School’s Shakespeare Carnival winners are.....
Hearken, noble students, lend thine ears!
For in the year of our Lord 2024, at the PLCA Shakespeare Carnival,
Thou hath displayed thy talents grand,
In crafting performances of Shakespearean lore.
Oh, joyous news doth ring in the air,
For 'twas the grandest Carnival yet, I declare!
And I, thy humble steward, am filled with glee,
To witness such unity and creativity.
To all who hath joined in this merry endeavor,
I extend my heartfelt praise, now and forever.
Be proud, dear students, of thy noble art,
For in thy collaboration, thou hath played thy part.
Yet, alas! A solemn truth I must impart,
For only one from each category may depart.
To the Regional Shakespeare Carnival, they shall go,
Representing PLC with flourish and show.
So, without further ado, let me proclaim,
The names of those who hath earned such acclaim:
Thy prowess and talent shine bright and clear.
To thee, chosen few, I raise a cheer,
For thou art bound for greater stages, near.
May fortune smile upon thee in thy quest,
As ambassadors of PLC, thou art truly blessed!

Head Lice
It is recommended that parents please check all their children at home and treat them if needed.
Signs of lice infestations include finding yellowish or white eggs that are the size of sesame seeds. They are not easily brushed away. Black or brown eggs are dead. There may be a red rash or red bite marks at the back of the neck or behind the ears.
If head lice are found, do not be alarmed, it is easily treated with head lice treatment from the chemist.
Any articles that come in close contact can harbour lice. Examples are clothes, towels and bed linen. All items need to be washed in hot soapy water or head lice soaking solution and then sun dried.
A five-step process can control head lice:
1. Detect: head lice and their eggs
2. Treat: with a head lice treatment
3. Prevent: use a lice comb to remove eggs
4. Repeat: the process after seven days
5. Clean: any articles in close contact.
As head lice are contagious it is suggested that you treat all members of the family at the same time.

PLC Armidale Foundation
Can you make a regular financial contribution to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund?
In 2022, the College made a considered decision to restructure fees for students in Kindergarten to Stage 4 to expand accessibility to a PLC Armidale education.
The provision of scholarships on merit will extend the opportunity for even more young women of character and purpose to receive an outstanding education at PLC Armidale, the region’s pre-eminent school for young women.
The PLCA Foundation Committee is focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, with the intent of raising $130,000 for the school to allocate immediately in the next round of scholarship assessment.
As many families within our community have directly benefited from the recent fee restructure, we ask that you consider making a contribution to support the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund.
Your gift will help the PLC Foundation Committee to offer these scholarships. We require significant and ongoing funding to ensure there is a continual capital base to support the program.
Donations will provide scholarships for the 2025 school year. In addition, gifts over $2 are tax deductible. You can also subscribe to make a small regular automatic donation which will quickly add up over the years.
The generosity of the PLC Armidale community has enabled us to maintain and provide an excellent learning environment for generations of young women.
Giving makes a real difference to every student who attends PLC Armidale now and into the future. We thank you for your continued support as we foster and build a community that stands together.
If you would like further information about the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund or know of a young girl who you believe would benefit from this opportunity, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 6770 1700 or email us at enquiries@plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au
A gift to the PLC Armidale Scholarship Fund will open the door for many more exceptional young women to attend PLC Armidale and be equipped to lead a life of significance.
You can make a difference by donating today.
