The process of electing student leaders in the Senior School culminated this week in the announcement of the 2027 Student Leadership Team.

Courage is required to step forward, nominate for one or more roles, prepare a manifesto, deliver a speech to staff and peers, be interviewed by a panel of executive staff, then await the outcome of the vote.
Character is required to lead well when entrusted with a formal position of responsibility; character is demonstrated by those managing the disappointment of not being elected yet are able to congratulate and support those who have.
Courage is required to put yourself forward. There is also courage in responding graciously when the answer is not the one you hoped to hear.
Perhaps this is one of the first lessons of leadership.
At PLC Armidale, leadership is not ultimately about the badge. It is about the person you choose to be if you are wearing one, and when you are not.
As one of our four pillars of experience at the College, leadership is expressed through service.
It is not primarily recognition, status or having your name attached to a position.
It is noticing what needs to be done, being willing and able to do it.
Including someone who may feel on the outer, encouraging others to experience success, avoiding gossip, keeping confidences, speaking up about wrongdoing and ...

Leadership opportunities across the College are not limited to the prefecture. Student Representative Council, Boarders Representative Council, Captains of individual sports and co-curricular activities are formal roles; however, expressions of inclusion, kindness and integrity are qualities available to every girl in our community.
For those appointed to our 2027 Student Leadership Team, a badge does not mark the culmination of leadership; it marks the beginning of a responsibility to serve.
As leaders are inducted early next term, each girl will make a pledge to fulfil their duties and obligations willingly and with integrity.
Badges will eventually be handed back. Positions will pass to someone else.
Generosity, kindness, integrity and a willingness to serve strengthen character, and character lasts considerably longer than a badge.

2026 PLC Armidale Whole School Colour Run
2026 PLC Armidale Whole School Colour Run
To celebrate our Year 12s’ Final Activities Day on Wednesday 23 September, all students will participate in a Whole School Colour Run at PLC Armidale.
As you arrive at the College on Wednesday 23 September, you will be greeted by our Class of 2026 doing their gate collection for 'Anya's Wish', the Year 12 target charity. The girls will wear their 'decorated' PLC uniform for this fundraising event and for the rest of the day.
That afternoon, we will hold our Whole School Colour Run (girls to bring their own old shirt to wear). All money raised will go towards Team PLCA's contribution to the 19 for 19 Chaallenge 2026 Anya's Wish Foundation fundraiser.
The Colour Run is a fundraising event held in support of Anya's Wish Foundation as a mark of respect for Anya Zuber and her family. Anya graduated in the class of 2019 and unfortunately passed away in 2020 from an aggressive and persistent form of Osteosarcoma. Much has been done to remember Anya, including her mother and health professionals developing Anya's Wish and the 19 for 19 Challenge to fund research and improve outcomes for children diagnosed with osteosarcoma.
Our Colour Run is a 1.9km event with a fun and colourful twist. It is about participation and ends with the students being covered in coloured powder by the time they reach the finish line. The powder used is non-toxic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly and skin-safe. It will commence after lunch on the Senior School Oval.
All students are to wear their Guild Sports Uniform with the PLC Armidale tracksuit pants or green PE shorts to school. Students are asked to bring a white or light-coloured shirt to wear for the run. Students will change back into their Guild shirt to travel home.
Sunglasses may be worn during the Colour Run. Students should also have their PLC hat with them for the Colour Run. If students are asthmatic, they can choose to not participate, or to run with their puffer. At the end of the Colour Run, students must stay at school until 3:30pm.
A permission form will be sent out next week and should be completed by Monday 21 September 2026.

Defence Lawyer Chelsea Schaeffer delivered a short workshop to some of our Stage 6 students recently.
“It is all good… until it isn’t" - covered the law and legal obligations, particularly as they relate to teenagers in a hyper-digital world.
Many young people operate under the mindset that an action is only wrong if they get caught, rather than recognising it as inherently unsafe or unethical. Understanding how the law works to keep everyone safe is essential, as is realising that legal compliance is not optional—it is a mark of character and a baseline expectation.

Our graduating Class of 2026 welcomed school leaders from across the region recently for an evening of connection and reflection.
Our guest speaker was Sophia Haggerty (nee Thatcher), a PLC Armidale graduate whose journey after school has been anything but conventional.
Rather than following a straight path from university and beyond, she is navigating a career change and returning to study later in life, all whilst raising three young children.
Today, Sophia is pursuing a career in rural medicine, with a particular interest in women's health, while balancing the demands of medical school and family life. Sophia enjoyed sharing her story, reflecting on the value of resilience, embracing unexpected opportunities and highlighting that everyone's path after school will be beautifully unique.

Wellbeing Wednesday
Wellbeing Wednesday
Each Wednesday, we run a creative wellbeing program for students in years 7-11 in small groups. In addition to the small group sessions, we also set aside time for individual sessions and tailored small groups.
Where possible, we attempt to identify girls we believe would benefit from additional support or creative wellbeing time. In these cases, parents are contacted to receive permission for their daughter to participate. However, we realise there may be many girls who wish to take advantage of this creative wellbeing time, and we would love to provide them with this opportunity.
Therefore, we wish to invite parents to please let us know if your daughter, or a suggested small group, would be keen to take advantage of this service. There are no additional costs involved, and students may attend over several weeks, depending on their needs and availability.
The creative wellbeing space is colourful, welcoming and relaxed, providing an environment where students can unwind through painting, drawing and other creative activities while engaging in supportive, confidential conversations. For some students, the sessions provide a chance to relax, connect and recharge. For others, they may offer additional support with concerns such as anxiety, stress, friendships, self-confidence, homesickness (for boarders), or other wellbeing challenges.
The program is facilitated by Paula Jenkins, a qualified Art Therapist and professional artist, currently completing a Master of Counselling. She brings extensive experience supporting young people through creative wellbeing programs, art therapy and mentoring.

Our Special Interest Projects (SIP) will be continuing in Term 3, with some new projects on offer for students in Years 7-10.
SIP is designed to broaden learning experiences, developing students' interests and talents across diverse areas. The program structure involves four semester-long projects over a two-year period built around the four pillars of student experience at PLC Armidale:

While our sequence of Explore Serve Journey programs spans Kindergarten to Year 12, peak experiences occur in the middle years of schooling. These are part of our curriculum and included in your tuition fees.
This is a particularly challenging time for girls in terms of dealing with change, developing identity, and navigating social relationships. The following programs assist students in moving through this turbulent stage with courage and character.

The purpose of the Pastoral Care model at PLC Armidale is to ensure that every girl is known and nurtured and that parents have a member of staff they can contact regarding any well-being issues that may arise.
Where possible, our Year Mentors remain with students on their journey throughout from Year 7 through to Year 9, and then with a new Mentor and Pastoral Care team from Year 10 to Year 12.
In addition, a Year Specialist has been allocated to assist students in each year group, and this person generally stays on this same year group for a number of rotations. Mentors and Specialists are also ably assisted by their Pastoral Care team members, under the oversight of the Head of Senior School, the College Chaplain, and our School Psychologist.

Students are not required to have a mobile phone at school. If one is brought, it must be switched off and not accessed during the school day.
Limited-function phones, or phones with low/no data for students in Stages 4 and 5 (Years 7 - 10) are preferred. If a mobile phone is brought to school, it is to be stored in the student’s locker, not pocket or bag. Students are required to secure their lockers with their own padlock.

Ongoing feedback and student reflection on learning are essential to measure understanding, strengths and areas for growth.
The engagement of parents in this process is a way to enhance communication between the College and home, providing an opportunity for parents to follow up with teachers regarding their child’s progress.
By logging regularly into Edumate, you will be able to see your daughter's assessment test results, teacher feedback on the task and upcoming tasks to put on the family calendar.
To access your daughter’s results, once into Edumate, you will see a tab titled ‘Progress’. From there, click on Past Tasks. You will also be able to see Upcoming Tasks and previous Academic Reports.

A PLC Armidale 'pocket' refers to embroidery on the blazer pocket that recognises students’ achievements throughout the year across four key pillars: Academic Endeavour; Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) ; Sport and Leadership and Service.
Each pillar has four levels of attainment: Blue, Silver, Gold, and Outright Gold Star, allowing students’ accomplishments to be displayed in a practical and lasting way on their uniform.

Recently, our boarding house turned into a full-on meme party for a night of laughs, costumes, and movies. The theme was “dress up as a meme” and everyone was absolutely committed; girls rocked up in all kinds of fun costumes, jokes, and creative looks that had the whole dining hall laughing.
For dinner, we feasted on crispy chicken schnitzel, curly fries and gravy, and a fresh Caesar salad and then ice cream with all the toppings for dessert.
Once we were full and happy, we jumped into a couple of quizzes packed with movie and meme facts. There were prizes up for grabs for the quiz winners and for the best-dressed meme of the night. By the end of the evening, the dining hall was filled with non-stop laughter, good vibes, and memories.
Thank you to all the girls and the staff for making this year great, and for the honour of being the 2026 Boarding Prefect. I will miss seeing the girls around the boarding house, and this has been such a great experience.
I will have many memories to take with me after I graduate, not only from this year but from all my school years, and I will always be grateful for the people who made the boarding experience enjoyable.
I would also like to say a big congratulations to Steph Blake for receiving Boarding Prefect for 2027. I know she will do a wonderful job and will use it to help her take every opportunity for the girls.

Additionally, digital technology protocols and expectations should be reviewed with your daughter. A signature panel is provided in her student diary, and we ask that it be signed to indicate that these guidelines have been read and understood, ensuring a shared commitment to safe and responsible technology use.

After-School Collection and Safety Protocols
For safety reasons, after-school collection at 3:45 pm will be from the front gate only. The side reception area is designated for bus boarding, so keeping it clear is appreciated. This also applies to morning drop-off. The front curb is a designated drop-off point. If you need to speak with staff, please use the parking areas to avoid disrupting traffic flow. Students attending Homework Centre should be collected from the side gate if the front reception is locked.

The Starry Night is a highlight of the year for our College. This exciting evening showcased the breadth of talent across the Senior School, featuring performances from our Drama, Dance, and Music ensembles.

Private Music Tuition
The PLC Armidale Private Tuition program allows girls to take part in instrumental and vocal lessons at the College. Lessons are offered on an individual and rotational basis by highly qualified teachers who are experts in their field. Most students have a 30-minute lesson; however, advanced students may negotiate a longer lesson time. Instruments on offer include violin, viola, cello, double bass, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, euphonium, bassoon, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, piano, voice, guitar, recorder or drums.

Our ACL Strength and Conditioning joint project with UNE was featured at the recent Independent Schools NSW (AISNSW) Sports Leadership Conference at Rydges Resort in the Hunter Valley.
This year's event, themed "Tradition Meets Transformation," brought together PDHPE and school sport leaders from across the state to explore evolving frameworks in coaching, student engagement, and athletic development.

Schools as a platform for early ACL injury prevention
At the 2026 AIS NSW Sport Leadership Conference, PLC Armidale Head of Sport Lucy Donaldson and UNE PhD candidate Oskar Staniucha presented their collaborative research into reducing ACL injuries among adolescent girls.
The presentation highlighted how schools can partner with research institutions to provide real-world environments for meaningful, evidence-based research. PLC students participated in baseline strength, movement and MRI testing before completing a 12-week intervention program focused on landing, jumping, deceleration, change of direction and lower-body strength.
With post-intervention testing now complete, the UNE team is analysing the results to determine how targeted school-based programs may help protect young female athletes from ACL injury.

Vale Mrs Maureen “Geography” Brown
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mrs Maureen “Geography” Brown, a cherished member of the PLC Armidale community.
For more than 30 years (1987 - 2018), Maureen inspired generations of PLC girls to look beyond the horizon, ask questions, embrace adventure, and engage with the world around them.
A Drama, English and Geography teacher, Maureen brought subjects to life with her intelligence, curiosity, and unmistakable sense of humour. A voracious traveller, Mrs “Geography” Brown had the remarkable ability to bring distant places back to Armidale and, in doing so, encouraged generations of girls to dream bigger and travel further.
She believed learning extended far beyond the classroom walls. Many Old Girls will fondly remember excursions to places such as the Warrumbungles, Canberra, Wellington Caves, Dubbo, Tingha and Moree, where Maureen's enthusiasm for people, places and stories was impossible to miss.
When asked about her favourite memories of PLC a few years ago for an interview, her answer was characteristically heartfelt, “the Pageant, the fieldwork, the GIRLS, the GIRLS, the GIRLS!!"
Many of us were blessed to experience this emphasis she placed on her students, and on preparing us for this big, beautiful planet that she loved so much. The impact she had on the lives of her students, colleagues and friends is immeasurable.
Our thoughts are with Maureen's family, friends and all those whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
